Hello all
DS has decided to use his 4 year AROTC scholarship at VMI ( still waiting on USMA ). I was wondering if the scholarship would cover tuition for the summer program before the rat line begins. He would be able to take one of the classes he needs in the fall early. Not sure how the scholarship works and I thought I would see if anyone on this board would know.
Thanks in advance

Thats a great question. The unit would also be able to answer that question, they can be reached at 540-464-7680

AROTC is typically limited to 8 semesters, no credit limit. My DS did the summer program before his rat year. It was well worth it. He is out of state but since the next 4 years were covered we thought it was a small price to pay. If you have any questions don't hesitate to PM me. VMI has far exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were high, I can't say enough positive things about it. In short my answer to your question is it would not cover the summer program.

@MNRC2018 - if you search this forum I recall that this question has been asked and was answered in at least one past post. I am almost certain that ROTC will not cover the cost of STP.
A couple of comments on STP:
1. If attending STP creates a financial hardship I would not worry if DS isn't able to attend. STP can be beneficial, but he will be fine without it.
2. STP can help him prepare academically and can help a Rat-to-be get the familiar with the layout of post, but STP is not the Rat line and will be nothing like what he will experience after Matriculation Day. Just pointing this out so DS does not get a false sense of what it will be like as a Rat from his time at STP.

If DS can swing it financially and has realistic expectations of what STP is, attending STP is a good idea. My DS was not able to attend and has thrived at VMI.

Good luck to your DS, wherever he ends up. VMI is tough, but as @Sargon stated, I can't say enough positive things about VMI. Feel free to PM me as well with questions.

ROTC won't cover STP but there are some other options for financial aid. I did STP years ago and found that it helped with a few things mentioned and not in previous posts.

1. Academic particularly if used for a course you know may be more challenging.

2. Layout of post which isnt big but can seem like a maze in hell week.

3. Physical conditioning which is key to rat success and doing it on the climate and terrain you will be a rat.

4. Connections with future brother rats again a nice help in hell week when companies are formed that STP attendees know several BRs right out the gate.

VMI used to show a statistic that demonstrated a correlation between STP and lower ratline attrition. I am not sure if that remains the case but I found it useful enough to serve as an STP counselor for two summers.

Thank you

Thank you for responding. DS wants to go and we have the funds to send him so we will. Glad to hear it is beneficial.
