My DS wants to get appointed to USMA but he has a single disqualification item that we knew about it. The portal's medical section has "Requested Waiver" since December 1, 2017. I understand that this is a waiting game, but I just want to get some feedback from others.

The DoDMERB's disqualification letter states that "Current or history of abnormal urinary findings: gross hematuria, microscopic hematuria, or pyuria." My DS has seen a pediatric nephrologist and his opinion is that this is a genetic thing that his mother, grandmother and other siblings have the same issues, but no one has any issues with kidney. So, the nephrologist stated that he doesn't have any concerns because he hasn't seen any progress on the findings since he was a little boy.

The letter was sent to DoDMERB in early February and USMA has the letter as well. Other than the medical condition, he is in very good spot in the district.

The questions are:
- It has been over 100 days and how long do we have to wait to see the decision?
- Since he also won the 4-year AROTC scholarship, so is it possible that one denies the waiver and the other grants the waiver?

Thanks.

When I applied for the class of 2021, USMA had a hard deadline of April 15th for medical issues to be resolved. I was disqualified and my application was terminated on April 13th (when I received my initial disqualification) because I was in the process of receiving a waiver at the deadline and qualification wasn't realistic at that point. I started the waiver process for USMA in late February, about the same time as I did for my 4yr AROTC scholarship (big mistake starting the USMA waiver process that late). The waiver for USMA was never investigated due to my disqualification, but I ended up receiving my waiver for ROTC in mid-July. In my application to USMA 2022, I started the waiver process in September. It was resolved by late January.

If USMA follows the same process that they did last year, then your waiver must be resolved by mid-April. Try poking around DODI 6130.03 to see if there is any pertinent information.

There is no standard date for a waiver to be resolved. Cadets in my ROTC unit have waited over a year for a waiver so that they could get contracted, but I only waited 4 months. Others I've talked to have waited two months.

In my estimation, one authority could technically deny it while the other doesn't, but it wouldn't make sense for them to do that, considering all cadets are held to the same standard by the time of commissioning. It didn't happen to me and I believe you'd be hard pressed to find someone it did happen to, provided the circumstances were normal.

There is no time table. My DS went through this for both as well. They are separate waiver boards. So one can waive the other may not.

Both have waived my sons condition. We received a letter on his portal from West Point admissions that they were seeking a waiver.

If you are still in the process of having your waiver processed, is your application automatically terminated?

My DS is still in the game. We were told that his file is very competitive. Just waiting on the medical waiver to get approved.

Ok. Even if you are very competitive, is it still possible for your application to be terminated if your waiver process is not resolved by April 15th?

We don't know that part... Only thing we know is that the all candidates need to get medically qualified by April 15, 2018...

Ok, thanks. This waiting game is KILLING ME.

I've been checking my candidate portal at least 10 times a day to no avail.

:)

Bad news folks,

I just e-mailed my RC regarding whether USMA terminates applications on the basis of failing to resolve an applicant's waiver process in time.

He replied...

THEY DO!!! :(

My DS went through this process. According to the letter we received from USMA admissions, they ask the USMA surgeon general for his/her recommendation of condition is waiverable, but ultimately it comes down to USMA admissions granting waiver

for those of you qualified (letter in portal dated 3/26) but waiting on a medical waiver, does your USMA portal still say 'disqualified' or does it say something else like 'waiver requested'? just curious as DS is in same situation...USMA portal says 'disqualified' and DoDMERB still says 'pending waiver submission/review'. i realize that they don't initiate waivers for all that are qualified and i also realize that if they do, there may not be time for remedials.

My portal has said waiver requested since feb 16

i thought it might say something more positive if a waiver was requested...thank you. and good luck!

DD's Dodmerb said "pending waiver submission/review by USMA" since end of November. USMA portal changed to Waiver requested on January 22nd and remained that way even after she was told waiver was approved. Dodmerb site updated to Waiver Approved before USMA portal. Good luck, hope you get some positive news soon.
