USMA AOG sponsored prep or USC with 3 year ROTC scholarship

DS is deciding between two options:

- AOG sponsored prep for one year then reapply to USMA next year.

- USC with 3 year ROTC Scholarship.

I would like some input and your thoughts from those with a similar experience. Does anyone have experience upgrading to a 4 year scholarship or a campus scholarship for the one year?

Sponsored prep, especially if you would have to take out a dollar of loans to cover that first year of college. A lot of the places have sponsored prep classes that count for credit. However this is the golden ticket.

However if you want USC, then reach out to the ROO and discuss the challenges or need for more scholarship money.

If you want Wesr Point then this is not even a question. It is sponsored prep. Only you can answer these questions. Maybe talk to your parents too.
 
Just realized this was a parent…have your kid reach out to the ROO about the scholarship money. There are no guarantees. Also talk to your kid about what he or she really wants…is it USC or USMA? These things are not interchangeable even if both lead to a commission.
 
I would also consider contacting USC financial aid office. Some schools themselves will offer inducements to get a kid to come knowing that they will get three years of full tuition from Uncle Sam. That has significant value to them.
