DD got the call from our RC this morning - turns out all the slots in her slate were filled from the start with last years prepsters and others (we are from one of the competitive districts), and she's far enough down the NWL that appointment is not likely this year.

Then he gave her the good news that she had been accepted for the "West Point Preparatory Scholarship Program" (RC asked previously if she was open to the idea). She needs to decide pretty quickly which prep school she wants - any thoughts/suggestions?

Also, anybody have an experience (good or bad) with the process?

What was the time between when RC asked if she was open to idea to when she received the official offer? Know someone else who asked about the same option. Thanks.

Civil Prep is a great opportunity - congratulations. I know it from an FFR as well as parent perspective (the latter b/c my DS is at Marion Military Institute - or rather currently at home - and it's going well.) I recommend Marion, but of course it's the only one I have personally experienced. So I concur w/ @BunkerDog1!) Marion has a very high % of appointments for those on the SA track - assuming one keeps up their grades, fitness and stays out of major trouble. Be aware the latter is a real thing as there's a good portion of the student population who aren't headed to the SAs, and are there to help with "maturity issues". And definitely call LTC Bowen, who leads the Academy prep track - very good recommendation above.

Since you have the golden ticket there is no way to go wrong. My DD went as self prep to NWP and absolutely loved her experience. It’s in the mountains in Southern California. The Durbeck’s are wonderful caring people. Feel free to message me if you want more info.

Congratulations to her, that is actually really great news! In discussions we have had with our state FF rep, Marion Military seems to be the preferred choice. I don't know if that is for Indiana but we have spoken to a few kids who have attended there. We have only heard good things and good results! Good luck to her!

My DS is at MMI, and he has really grown as a result. Call LTC Bowen. He is very helpful.

I second this statement. NWP is a one semester program so your DD would study the second semester at school of her choice. We did this.

I think there are pros and cons to both.
- is your child a self starter and the type to thrive going solo on the second semester?
- Does your child have any military related experiences? How do you expect they will adjust to military life at WP? If this is a question mark, maybe a military school would help in this area. (I do recall a WP contact telling us that the military portion of the prep year really has no bearing on admissions and they like to leave the military training to them.)
- what are the costs to you either way?
- are there areas your DD would like to shore up academically before getting to WP? NWP is basically a semester long ACT/SAT review course with emphasis on taking the tests several times. Our child did not experience substantial foundational or critical subject matter at NWP that would help in Plebe year classes. The second semester was advantageous though as they took subjects they would take at WP and built a better foundation.
- We really enjoyed the ability to have our child home for that second semester. Once at WP, your time with them will decrease each year.

We were asked the question on the 20th and started getting calls from the prep schools on the 25th. We got the official paperwork/contract on the 26th.

Hope that helps
