Has anyone heard from a Field Force rep where they are ranked by the admissions at USMA?

FFR's do not have access to rankings or WCS scores. They will only know that information if the RC shares it for some reason.

FFR's do have access to candidate potential such as Risk, Competitive, Qualified, etc. Status can change back and forth as information is added to the file.

I heard in certain states such as NJ they tell candidates where they are ranked but it seems very unusual for just NJ?

what's the difference between qualified and competitive?

A Risk candidate can still be qualified...they are just on the lower end of the WCS spectrum.

A Competitive candidate may or may not be qualified. “Qualified” is a separate thing...it just means the candidate has the minimums they need to be admitted (I don’t know if nominations are factored into this). Competitive candidates, as the name suggests are on the higher end of the WCS spectrum. These are the types of kids USMA requests waivers for and gives the occasional LOEs/LOAs to.

When I asked my FFR about how I was doing, he told me I was “highly competitive.” I do not know if this is a formal category that candidates receive or if it was just his wording. There are probably plenty of categories we don’t know about for candidates. Only select people have access to this information.

The details of the behind the scenes interactions between admissions and candidates is really not important to the candidates.

You basically have a file and ratings start when you complete the initial questionnaire. Initial rankings are based on what you have submitted in that initial screen and it changes as new information is received.

The intent is to help manage limited resources of FFRs to help with applicants who are serious about the process. As stated before, FFRs do not have access to WCS scores.

Qualified means the file has been formally reviewed and determined "3Q" - qualified academically, physically, and medically.

Competitive is more of an estimate - test scores, GPA, and other criteria currently in the file indicate the candidate has a decent chance of becoming qualified.

Highly Competitive is not a category. "Highly" is someone's subjective evaluation, but certainly a good sign if that person is familiar with the candidate's file compared to class profiles.

Thanks for clearing this up. I always wondered about it!

Field Force Representatives do not have access to the whole candidate score for each candidate, but they do have access, on the field Force Portal, tw information like ACT and SAT scores, as well as achievements for each candidate in their region. They also talk to the candidates, and have a fairly good perspective for each of their candidates qualifications. Thus, they could if they wanted kind of give a perspective for where he or she stands, as to other candidates in the district.

In my son's experience a couple years ago his ffr didn't share that type of information. However, the regional commanders at West Point we're very open and candid about where he stood, and also told him exactly where he needed to improve to get on the top of the list. When we took our very first visit to usma admissions, and sat in on the briefing, we spoke with the RC who was on duty. He pulled open the district information, and not only told my son how how high his ACT score needed to get to beat out the kid in front of him (told him he needed at least a 31), but what other accomplishments the other kids had who were at the top of the district, and what my son needed to do to get over them. He actually asked my son if he knew a few of the kids. He didn't, but I thought that was interesting. It was a great meeting, as my son walked out of there incredibly motivated, and ultimately he more than accomplished everything recommended. Got the ACT to 33, and won the slot easily. Other kids in district also ended up with a spot off nwl.

Talk to your Regional Commanders. They have a ton of information, and are willing to share it. It also never hurts to get your name somewhat familiar with the RCs.
