USMA lengthens service obligation to 6 yrs??

A good friend of mine who is going to be a Firstie this year always wanted to fly but is now reconsidering due to the length of the obligation. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of others are doing the same.
Funny because the 10 years requirement doesnt seem to be an issue in the Air Force. However, if we are talking about Army and the most you will fly as an officer is 2-3 years, then i can see why the ten years requirement could be an issue.

If they increased the general commitment time for graduates, would they tell prospective cadets before they enter the Academy? Or, could they change your service requirement while you are at an Academy?

They could change it while they are at USMA, but it would only likely apply to Plebes and Yearlings. Making a change to service obligation after commitment as a Cow would not go over well with current or future classes.

The service obligation is actually 8 years (5 active duty, 3 Individual Ready Reserves). It is my understanding that the 5/3 ratio can be changed by the Department of the Army without congressional action. But again, the benefits of any sudden change would have to be weighed against the damage it would do to future recruiting.

Resurrecting this thread to ask the obvious question, just out of curiosity: Is Big Army continuing 'the great yield experiment'? Is USMA C/O 2025 being committed to five years or six?

One more resurrection for 2022: was the experiment just for 2020 or have there been others asked for a six year commitment?
