USMA TWE Question

My DD just received a TWE in the mail (1/2 hour ago). She is still at school and doesn't know yet. Any chance that this is not a denial?

She received 2 nominations which would have been 3 but our Senators do not overlap nominations. She has held a student government office each year in high school and is Student Body President, Civil Air Patrol Cadet Commander, has a varsity letter in Field Hockey and Softball, has run 1/2 and full marathons, has held every office in 4-H, has won many speech competitions, received numerous awards for leadership and community service, raised over $50,000 for a charity in 10 years, and has an ACT super score of 32 with a weighted GPA of 4.18.
Has she applied for any other academies other than USMA ?

Hey, did you open it? I hope not. My guy was accepted and received the BFE and then they sent a thin white envelope but it was not the rejection, it was the letter saying hurry up and make a decision.
You won’t know what it is until your child comes home to open it.

Unfortunately it was a denial. She was obviously disappointed and took some time to herself after opening the letter. A couple hours later she was implementing Plan B by accepting admission to her West Coast school and contacting the ROTC battalion. She said she will apply again next year.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting. I sincerely hope your news is better.

Well said. In my own case, however, I was offered a Civil Prep spot this year without any TWE, but I know how seemingly random the process can be at times.

What have you decided on CoastieHistory?[/QUOTE]
After a lot of thought and deliberation, I decided to accept Civil Prep over USMMA or ROTC. My RC emailed me this morning saying I should begin to think about which military college I would like to attend, but I am already deadset on Marion after visiting about 3 weeks ago once I heard about Civil Prep.

@frontline296th
It sounds like your girl has a wonderful plan and is resilient! (Excellent parenting!)
May she fall in love with her ROTC battalion and with her university--and then be making a very difficult choice this time next year.
Best wishes to all. There are only good thins ahead.

Also, you get a prize for not holding the letter to the light and trying to read it--or thinking about steaming it open while waiting for her to return home. Great job Mom!

I haven't seen her portal and I know she hasn't checked it since Wednesday. I have no idea why she isn't checking everyday and it's absolutely driving us insane!

Could actually be a blessing in disguise. Could be an emotional time for her. But the disappointment of today will quickly fade as the excitement and anticipations of her plan B starts bubbling to the surface!! it’s such a rollercoaster ride! And if we see her next year as a re-applicant? Awesome.

I say all the time, that these are my favorite stories to read here. Of people that worked hard towards their dream for a year, and come back stronger, more confident and ready to knock the socks off of admissions. I have yet to read a story of a re-applicant that didn’t think the benefited from their year of prepping.

The other awesome stories are those where they thrive in their plan B, as their new plan A.

Soon today will only be a memory, absorbed by the excitement of your tomorrows.....

VERY true!

Sorry Gaspar...but it looks like you were headed to the Boat School anyway. So please don't think about it again. You had a very successful academy admissions run--and being such a desirable candidate in general should demonstrate that you have the skills to do very well with the challenges ahead of you.

However, on I-Day, when you are dragging that wheelie cart...know that we are all thinking of you...with a little snicker. Also, Bancroft Hall is air conditioned now.
Have fun summer sailing on the Severn.
Good luck! Fair winds and following seas...shipmate!

I can definitely confirm that there are people with a worse resume who got a no, lol. If it is a TWE (and to be perfectly honest, it most likely is), your DD sounds like a great candidate for an AOG scholarship. She would go to to a military junior college as a sponsored cadet. It is referred to as the "golden ticket". My DS had one, went to Marion, and it was the best thing he ever did. He matured immensely, made a tight group of friends who have been excellent support at West Point, and we developed a parent network of some of the best people I know on the planet who love my kid like their own and really watch out for him. Looking back, I can honestly say I am glad my kid did not get direct admit. Have her get in contact with her RC immediately if she is interested and let him know. To paraphrase something someone on here said: when the door closes, start looking for the open window.

Thanks for the advice Labrador. She has her Plan B in place already and I'm sure she will execute it once her disappointment wears off. She was awarded a 4 year AROTC scholarship at the first Board and received an acceptance at one of her top choice universities complete with a Merit scholarship for room & board.
I will add to this. My DD got the twe first go round had a back up plan of rotc/college but ultimately went the prep school route. I would agree with Labrador that she should call her RC and ask about the AOG scholarship. It is a golden ticket, unless you mess up big time you most likely will be a member of the next class.

The prep school scholarships are a great deal. Two of my brothers went this route with USNA. One attended Deerfield where he was on the wrestling team with a really nice kid named Abdullah. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdullah_II_of_Jordan

Also, have two nieces who went this route. Unfortunately, also with USNA.

So sorry about your DD getting the TWE but to provide her this encouragement. Please see my post in the "So it is April thread." Your DD's profile including scores and 2 senatorial nominations is amazingly close to our DD's. Like yours our state does not have the District House Rep nominate if the Senators do and that creates a challenge. Last year our DD went into the last week of April before getting her TWE, and headed to her plan B with a 4 year ROTC scholarship, but she immediately opened a new application. With 4 nominations in hand this year and a semester of college under her belt she got her BFE this year. I recommend your DD do the following:
1) Open a new application for 2024 asap
2) contact the regional admissions officer and Ffr and make sure they are aware you are reapplying and discuss what they suggest needs improvement. Keep in contact with them but not to the point of bugging them.
3) Pursue the district nomination with all energy you have. Coming into the interview in a ROTC Class A uniform leaves an impression. Our DD's interview boards remembered her and admired the determination. Having that district nomination puts you in a smaller pool to win the appointment.
4) Get support of the plan B school ROTC commander and the ROTC nomination. Our DD's Colonel at her SMC was completely supportive, even with them also say they didn't want to see her leave but "it is best for the Army."
5) Take a course load at the plan B school that mirrors WP's plebe year and do your best (Note: All A's are not necessary)

We have lived through exactly what you are experiencing but tell her to keep forging ahead. If she was this far in the process she was very close and like ours I bet next year is her year. Or she may find she loves her ROTC program which is a great path too. Best of luck
