Hi all,

When does USMAPS start? My son received a call that he will be getting an appointment to the Prep School. He is currently on the waitlist at NAPS, USCG and accepted his appointment to USMMA. His heart is at USNA, but USMA just may be a better fit/opportunity than USMMA if he does not get into NAPS.

Any advice is appreciated. Thx!

I think this ultimately comes down to what your DS’s goals are. If being a Naval Officer is his goal, then he has 1 option at this point, USMMA. It’s a unique school and program. If he is open to those experiences and the majors offered, it could be a fit. If it doesn’t, then do not attend. If he is open to serving then MAPS is a great option. He technically can accept both those options and if NAPS comes through he can respectfully decline the others. USMA is a great institution. Its goal is to produce Army officers. Does he want to be an Army Officer? Can he see himself in the field, combat arms, doing Army stuff?

To answer your initial question, R-Day for USMAPS this summer is July 15.

Thank you for your response. Very helpful. He has always been interested in infantry and SEAL training. USMMA would be the best option (at this point) for becoming a Naval Officer. That being said, USMA is now an option and our DS is looking at the varying differences and resultant career paths.

USMA has some great combat arms options. Special Forces could be something for him to explore and see if it’s a fit in the Army.
