USMAPS vs. WPPS /AOG Scholarship

My DD has been asked about her "interest/willingness" to attend USMAPS or accept an AOG Scholarship if she doesn't get a direct appointment. She has been told that she is fully qualified for USMA and is on the NWL but is coming from a highly competitive district (aka likely not getting that direct appointment). All this coming from email correspondence from her WP contact (is that the RC?). Anyhow, we were aware of USMAPS,but not the AOG path. Anybody have any experience? Opinions? Do they cover 100 % tuition? Likelyhood of the receiving an appointment for class of 2022? Any opinions welcomed...
Btw...Not a recruited athlete...

My 2018 cadet at USMA was offered an AoG slot so this is only my observations. At first glance - my 2018 DS was hesitant (the thought of an extra year was worrisome to him) but after receiving information from his RC and speaking to the leadership at MMI - he became very excited about the opportunity.

First cost - the AoG scholarship did not cover full tuition however MMI did also contribute. We did end up having an out of pocket expense however - it was relatively minimal and worth every penny! (There is also a student loan option to cover the remaining expenses FWIW.)

Second – on acceptance rates…all 26 of the sponsored cadets at MMI in my 2018 DS’s class received their appointments to their respective service academy. And looking back year over year - they pretty much had a 100% acceptance rate. The slot is really theirs to lose.

Third – the experience was incredible for preparing those cadets for their plebe year on both the Military and Academic front. The staff at MMI was completely engaged in their success and it showed from day one to graduation day. MMI assisted in scheduling the nomination interviews (My DS conducted his MOC interview via phone call).

I will also add – I can only speak for MMI and I understand the other civil prep options all have their strengths.

Bottom line – it would be my preference more cadets get the prep school option as it truly is an incredible experience and prepares the cadets well for their service academy experience.

Congratulations on the wonderful options you have and feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Thank you for your input. I do have some more questions. We are currently on vacation but I will pm you when back if you don't mind.

Two brothers and a niece did the AOG for USNA through nonmilitary prep schools. A nephew did NAPS.
Both are great programs with advantages. I would not say any have disadvantages- just what you prefer and are offered.
The ones who attended civilian prep schools had social and academic experiences that they normally would not have received. My brother even went to school and wrestled with the current King of Jordan. Not the type of school my parents could have afforded on their own.
The one who went to NAPS also enjoyed his time and the extra year definately helped him academically.
Good luck!!

We found out that she is NOT a candidate for USMAPS since she is fully qualified for USMA. So if offered, it will be the AOG.

Highly recommended and fully endorse the AoG option. There are some very good options available so I will try not to be overly biased towards MMI! CONGRATULATIONS to your DD!.

Still in limbo out here in UT District-3. No word from USAFA or USMA. No TWE. No AOG. No appointments. No nada. Just limbo....The wait continues...

My DS received a phone call several weeks ago from his RC stating that he'd most likely not get an appt. (very competitive district in NY) but USMA would offer an AOG scholarship. There's been no update to his portal and his FFR has not heard anything. Starting to get concerned. He also received a 4 year AROTC scholarship. We're looking at MMI as it seems to set up the candidates nicely for their 1st year at USMA. Anyone in the same situation?

Has he followed up with his RC? Sending a quick email asking if there has been any determination of whether he will receive a direct appointment or appointment to civil prep is totally appropriate. My DD was offered AOG, but it was kind of up in the air for a bit whether it would be direct or not so she just stayed in contact every week or so.

Spoke to his RC last week. Unfortunately there was no updates. We reached out to MMI and they will take my DS as a self-prep applicant if the AOG doesn't go through. MMI also told us that there are still AOG scholarships to be awarded.

Our DS is finishing as a self prep at MMI next week and recently received his appointment to the USAFA. Last year we were hoping for a falcon scholarship (didn't happen) but while waiting, he applied for scholarships at MMI. They told him if a Falcon did come through eventually, they would just apply it. That way he could get his application in for their private scholarships. If you are out of state as a self prep, they will look to help you offset as much of the cost as possible. It's a phenomenal school with phenomenal people. Best to you all !

Same for us except for my DS is USMA. He applied for all available scholarships. We're in NY. My DS and I will be visiting the school in 2 weeks and are very excited.
