Is there any way to let West Point Admissions know you are intrested in USMAPS or do they just give you the option later down the road?

If the deny you from USMA, they will automatically put you in the admissions board for USMAPS.

flyersboy114 is correct - kind of. If you are found not "scholastically qualified" for USMA then you will be automatically considered for USMAPS.

The application is online now, but in other years when they sent out a booklet with the forms to complete, there was a postcard that candidates could send back indicating that you would be interested in a prep program.
It never hurts to let admissions know of your desires - many candidates are not interested in prep school so if you are interested - show them the love.

Hi. I am a new member but long time visitor. This is my first post. My son is currently on an AOG scholarship to "civilian prep." He let his local contacts and contacts at USMA know that if he did not receive an appointment he would be very interested in either in either USMAPS or civilian prep. Because he he was 3 Q'd he was not eligible for USMAPS. However, based on his experience thus far I would wholeheartedly recommend the civilan prep route. In short, if you are interested in either program I would say don't be bashful about mentioning it.

Is the application you are talking about the standard USMA application or a seperate USMAPS application. Also do you think I should just send my admissions officer a letter telling him about my intrestes

1. There is NOT a separate USMAPS application. I was referring to the USMA application.

2. Yes. Initiating communication with your admissions officer is showing them the love.

I ditto everything that FallenAngel77 wrote. My daughter is a USMA plebe who got to USMA via the civilian prep route.

Oh gosh no. It is early. Believe it or not.
If you are in a time crunch - make sure your nomination applications are all done and done well.

I finished all of my nomination applications over the summer.

Do you know if USMA allows you to enter CFA scores, then send new ones in if they are better?

You take the CFA once and submit it. They score it.
Occassionally, admissions has given a candidate the opportunity to re-take the CFA if they failed one sections AND they would like to make an offer of an appointment.

So - no the decision to re-take it is not up to you - it's up to admissions.

RE: Nominations applications - please update them with anything significant. Made team captain, club officer, won any awards etc. Also if you have retaken the SAT's this fall - make sure the scores got to the office. If they were sent directly then double check and make sure they got there.
If you take the October test - you can mail or fax them in - check with the MOC office.

I went to my states Academy day this weekend and there was less than thirty kids there. Only about eight of them expressed any intrest in West Point. I got a chance to talk with the senators/congressman aids and the said that they do not have very many applciations open at this time (in fact she said that if I wanted to go to USMMA she could promise me a nomination because of such little intrest by anyone else) if there are only say ten kids who want to go (and none of them are from my district) and at least 25 nomination slots open (2 senators=20 and congressman=5) does that mean I have a foot in for a nomination?

USMAPS vs. civ. prep school

Where can I read more about the differences between these two? I assume you pay for one and the other WP pays for. Have not considered this before, but got an email asking if my son does not get into WP directly, would he consider West Point Prep School. Need to do more research (quickly!) before he can answer.
Thanks...

Whoa - two things going on here --

Spartanshock117: Not sure how you arrived with 5 nomination slots open. Each Senator gets 10 names to submit per opening from the entire STATE.
Your Congressman gets to submit 10 names per opening from his/her Congressional district.
Regardless of what your Congressman's aid says - do not assume there will be less than 10 applications. Many applications arrive the last day.
If a Congressman has 8 applications for 10 slots he may nominate all 8 or not.

JonDavid - If your son was contacted by admissions about West Point prep this would be USMAPS. You can visit the USMAPS website here:
http://www.usma.edu/USMAPS/

If your son wants to attend the academy this is a terrific way to go with many many benefits. Please encourage your son to speak to his admissions officer about this opportuntiy.
At USMAPS, you are basically enlisted and get paid, there is no charge for attending.

My son attended NMMI as an AOG sponsored prep two years ago. He is now a yearling at USMA. He had two choices...a 4 year AROTC scholarship to a great college in our state or one year of prep at a military junior college and then on to USMA. He decided to do the extra year of prep because he wanted to go to USMA more than he hated the idea of that extra year. If they are offered civil prep they still have to go through the application and nomination process but the liasion at the college and at West Point will help with this. They do not guarantee an appointment but about 95% do get one the next year. The candidate has to get good grades, pass the physical fitness test, stay out of trouble, and get a nomination. The saying about civil prep candidates is "the appointment is theirs to lose."

The West Point AOG gives a partial scholarship and the military junior college also gives some scholarship money. You have to pay the difference. Unless the process has changed there are 4 military colleges to pick from. The two most popular schools are NMMI and MMI because of affordability and reputation.

Some information about civil prep from two of the schools:

If your son is on the National Waiting List and says he would consider prep school it does not mean they will take him off the NWL. He could still get a direct appointment. In my opinion it is not a bad thing to say he would consider this option unless he dead set against an extra year of college.
