USMC SLCDA Summer camp

Stella,
I do know they had some down time, but not a whole lot. They worked one day with Habitat for Humanity in Fredericksburg, one day they toured DC and then went to 8th & I to see the President's Own and the Silent Drill Team perform. They visited George Mason (I believe, don't quote me on that exact school) and spoke with the local NROTC recruiters to explain the scholarship process. They had a TBS day where all Marine 2nd Lts. end up for 6 months. They did do PT quite a bit and some leadership and team building exercises outdoors. My son did NASS as well last year along with about 4 other camps and this one ranked up with the best of them. His best friend also got in, so that may have helped, :). They truly didn't have anything bad to say. Last year was it's inception so I can imagine that this year will even be better since they probably worked any kinks out I hope this information helps. I think it is very worthwhile and it is FREE, except for transportation! Good luck to your kids!!!!

From looking at all of the pictures and videos of it on their website and FB page, it looks like an awesome camp, very worthwhile, I hope I can get in. Thanks for sharing your sons experience!

Apparently, you are interpreting information on that website diffrerently than I am. It looks to me to be primarily focused on RECRUITING those interested in enlisting in the Marines and yes, SOME of them will one day become officers.

They said on the website it was geared towards those wanting to be officers, and on the power point on the website, it said there will be/were NROTC and USNA officials to talk about the process of applying.

Thanks, but I am not confused. You are welcome to attend any number of activities that relate to learning more about the military and the various options they provide. NASS is the one run by USNA.

time2....click on this link below, on the right hand side under MARINE OFFICER this camp is listed. It is not for kids wanting to enlist. No one said it was NASS or connected to NASS. We all understand that NASS if put on by the USNA; however, the USNA will send representatives to this camp to talk to the students as well. Probably because not everyone gets into NASS, or some of the kids may not know about NASS. They also will have Officer Recruiters there to talk about the NROTC scholarship. There are many different ways to earn a commission in the USMC and this camp will help highlight the varied avenues. Here is the link:

I don't care to engage in a debate with you over semantics. Those who enlist can become an officer in various ways. One can also attend an ROTC program. The main focus of this forum is those wanting to attend USNA to become an officer upon graduation.

I am a Marine officer at present. Thanks for the link, as I do often get asked "how do you become a Marine officer" and this is one more available resource that I can recommend. I certainly do think it is relevant to the USNA thread, not least because, as prior posters have described, during the program they brief the attendees on several different methods of officer accession, from USNA attendance to participation in NROTC. NASS doesn't have room for every applicant, and this could be a nice option for the USMC-focused potential USNA candidates as an alternative too or addition to the NASS experience.

I would have enjoyed this back in the day, I'm sure!

Thanks GoSox....my husband is also a Marine Officer and our DS is applying to 3 SA's in hopes to earn the title of officer himself. I think this thread was hijacked a little bit. My purpose for posting about it was for the Sophomores that are thinking about becoming a Marine Officer, they can do this camp this summer and apply for NASS their Junior year. Also, for the Juniors that either won't get into NASS or just want to do both as my DS did last summer. The camp is fairly unknown so I try to get the word out as much as possible!

Wondering if this program talks of the admissions process for academys, in a general sense?
Also, was the physical part of it demanding?
Finally, are the kids kept busy?
Ours seems to want the most active and challenging experiences from these summer programs, coupled with some insight on admissions.

Thanks!
S

First off, it is completely dedicated to marine corps officers. there was only one enlisted marine around us. the rest were capts, majs, ltcols.

I do not believe that SLCDA and the academy talk. we had one brief on usna as a route to go if we wished to become marine corps officers, but that was all.

The physical part was one of the most fun for me. we did not do anything insane physically. we ran, did pull ups, and did sit ups one day. we did a very toned down CFT another day, and did Combat Conditioning the day we went to TBS (which btw was hands down the most fun day)

and we were extremely busy. the program was very well done and extremely organized. as i said earlier, i would much rather go to SLCDA than ss just because i want to be a marine and i also found everything i learned to be much more valuable than what went on at the usafa ss.

hope that helps

Camp unknown but the link was greatly appreciated. I think it is Officer track not enlisted?

I too really appreciate you posting the info on this camp.

for those of you filling out the application, or those from last year, did you restrict your answers on the leadership activities or volunteer activities sections to just one line/answer? or are you expanding it further?

thanks

I'm taking about 2-3 lines per leadership position. Not a long winded answer but make sure you get everything in and don't sell yourself short.

Rudyinok,

I agree with Bear...don't sell yourself short. My son listed everything that he could think of; however, he kept it short enough so it wasn't a novel. 2-3 lines sounds about right if I recall! Good luck to you both! I hope you both get in and have a blast!

What kind of stats are you guys(or girls) applying with if you don't mind me asking?

thank you for heads up on this!!!

selection just announced and we have one very happy junior who was chosen. never would have been possible without your info, t&omom!!

AWESOME

Yay! I am so happy that it worked out and that your DS/DD was selected! CONGRATS!!!!

I got in! Thank you T&O mom for making me aware of this great opportunity, I would definitely not have found out about it otherwise.

Bear....that is awesome news! I saw the list on FB and hoped you were one of the selectees! Good Job!!!!

Congrats Bear! And congrats to your DD/DS jrpa!

I was originally going to apply, but got accepted to a different summer program that would've overlapped, so I'm going to apply next year instead (and hopefully get selected!).
