USMMA Class of 2027 Waiting Room & Hangout

My son received his Logging IN class 2027 reporting instructions yesterday!!! So they are sending them out!!! I learned a lot from everyone here and I want to say Thank you for your help and support. We are greatly appreciate it! Still have tons of questions 😂.
For a laugh, I've attached a copy of my Logging In Class of 1965 document. We reported in on 20 August 1961, a hot and sweltering Long Island Day. Rooms were not air conditioned back then! Take note we were issued (3) sets of underwear and (10) paper collars, among other things.

That's quite a document. $0.83 per day paid quarterly was $300 per year, but a quarter of that went for books.

Love it. Was Don Forbes in your class? I know that he didn't graduate, but I sailed with him and also met him regularly when I would survey the ships he was sailing as CE on.

We got a huge raise during sea year. $111.15 a month, same as Annapolis mids. Thankfully the occasional ships officer would give you $10 or $20 when you went ashore.

DS received an Appointment yesterday, May 16th! He has 48 hours to decide.
The package came via Fedx and was dated May 12th (arrived 4 days later).
He has been onboard with his plan B for a couple months so this throws a kink, a good kink, in his plans.
Don’t get trapped by the timing of “48 hours to decide.” Make sure you know that end-point.

DD only sent me a screenshot of her DoDMERB portal which reflects "withdrawn." Per her text, USMMA portal now says "medically disqualified and waiver denied." DoDMERB still reflects "Under Waiver Review" for USNA. Although many say that USMMA uses USNA decisions, we are staying extremely hopeful that USNA will

So, I just got the reporting instructions and was wondering, how many forms total is it that we have to fill out? Also for paying for Plebe kit, educational kit, and the computer package, is a Pell Grant able to pay for that?

Unfortunately the Pell grant is not able to, I reached out to financial aid and asked. You have to purchase them and then you’re able to reimburse yourself after the academic year starts.

So I pay for it out of pocket and then the Pell grant will reimburse, essentially?

You will find that there will be plebes from some really wealthy families at KP, many of whom spend literally thousands of dollars per month. It can be tough to be around that kind of reckless spending when you are struggling to get by. Both my kids worked during their final three years at KP and paid their own way with sea year money and weekend jobs. They even earned spending money during plebe year shining shoes, giving haircuts, waxing floors, and taking extra watches. You are technically not supposed to accept money for helping out your classmates, but it is pretty commonplace. The financial aid office is very helpful with all cost questions. You have enough to worry about at KP without worrying about money.

The Midshipmen at KP come from many different financial situations. Many do work side jobs while attending the academy, either at local business' or shoveling snow and light landscaping for local residents, taking watches, or cutting other mids/plebes hair. There is no prohibition for Mids accepting cash from another Mid. Happens all the time, especially if one wants to sell a watch. As far as plebes spending thousands of dollars a month, I'd love to know what your basing that on. Plebes are rarely allowed liberty off campus, so I doubt they are spending thousands of dollars at the NEX or with doordash.

I made my extra dough by typing others' term papers and such. Typing was probably the most practical class that I ever took in high school. Lots of jobs in the area, too. I also parked cars at a country club for more extra money.

And prior to recognition they can't even use DoorDash whenever they want, it's an earned privilege as well.

For the official orders to report, do I bring both the acceptance/declination sheet and the sheet with the order number? Or do I just bring the one with the order number?

When in doubt bring both. My advice would be to bring a copy of every document you have signed and/or submitted and leave a second copy of everything at home with your parents. Every year it seems that some plebe candidates have some kind of important paperwork that is lost. You will have enough to worry about on the day you report. It will be slightly less stressful if you know you have backup paperwork with you.
