USMMA DoDMERB

Stressing about DoDMERB. If anyone can tell me about their experiences and if they had similar past conditions as me I would love to hear.

My appointments are soon, I already filled out the survey with the following yes answers:

-I have taken over-the-counter medicine like dayquil, Advil, Claritin for mild cold, flu and cough conditions
-I had Invisalign aligners for aesthetic purposes in middle school and haven't had them since - no issues or implications
-What I'm mainly worried about: I have had a tree pollen allergy which ended sometime early in middle school, I put that I don't have it anymore and I can't even remember the last time I saw the allergist. I'm just wondering if this can lead to some issues where they may need to see my old medical files regarding it or something.

Also, there was surprisingly no question regarding fractures to any part of the body besides the skull but I am sure it will come up at the physical.
-Last Spring, I broke my 5th metacarpal. I had a cast, and everything healed by June. Absolutely no implications or issues arose from it and I didn't get surgery so I'm just wondering if anyone can shed light on how this might go. I'm an LOA recipient and am just itching to pass clearly.

Don’t stress! USMMA uses Naval ROTC to process waivers. They were the fastest of the three SAs that my son got waivers for (concussion years before.) They may ask you for AMI (additional medical information) but don’t let that worry you. Even if the do DQ you (DODMERB requirements are inflexible) waivers for common issues are usually straight forward and fairly easy to resolved with communication. You cant go back and live a different medical history. It is what it is, but if asked for more information try to provide it all as quickly as possible. It would probably be helpful if you do track down the last time you saw an allergist. It is likely something the physical provider will ask and DoDMERB will want to know. “I can’t remember” raises a lot more questions than I was last treated by “dr allergist with abc allergy group in Jan of 2012” “I have had no further symptoms or treatments since that time.” Or something to that affect.

Also, I don’t think they care about broken bones, and I don’t think the physical provider asked. My son broke his wrist in pre-school and I’m fairly certain he wasn’t asked about it. Broken bones that are set and heal properly aren’t usually ever an issue again. I’m sure the skull is more concerning because of possible resulting brain injury and that’s why they ask that.

If you filled out this form for your medical history, it’s question 50 for bone injuries, surgery, medical treatment, etc. You would have provided amplifying info in the Remarks. Dates, nature of injury, treatment, resolution.

As of last Wednesday, ds has submitted all pertinent information to portal, has a nomination, but has not received a DoDMERB link yet. When should he expect it? He's written his assigned admissions counselor but hasn't heard back. Thanks for any info.

After you complete the medical history on the DODMETS site the last step is scheduling the optometry and medical exams. This is something the candidate does from the DODMETS site. When both exams are completed, the doctors send the exam reports back to DODMETS. DoDMETS checks the exams for accuracy, signatures, and missing information. Once all are complete the send everything to DODMERB for a medical determination. A few days after the exams are sent to DODMERB the candidate can view status, see PDFs of the exams, and communicate with DODMERB through the DODMERB portal. Good luck through the process!

USMMA had the toughest eyesight standards of all the FSAs. My brother was unfit medically due to poor eyesight for KP and went to West Point.
They don’t care about broken bones as long as there are no issues after they heal. I entered with five separate breaks and commissioned with six.
Tree nut allergies are an automatic disqualification. My CO’s son couldn’t attend USNA or USMMA because of it. It ended a family legacy of USNA grads and being Admiral.

Not sure about that statement “USMMA had the toughest eyesight standards of all the FSAs”. From the USMMA Academy website (https://www.usmma.edu/admissions/7-medical-exam), “A candidate must have minimum uncorrected visual acuity of 20/400 in each eye, correctable to 20/20 in each eye.” There are of course other reasons beyond basic visual acuity that might lead to disqualification.

I was in touch with Mr. Muellen before the tech crash of 22, and he said my condition is waiverable and people with it usually fare well. So I have not heard from the Academy and my DoDMERB says "Under Waiver Review." Does that mean USMMA initiated the waiver process? Should I be taking any action at this point?

Someone with more knowledge than I can correct me, but I do not believe that "Under Waiver Review" in DoDMERB means that the SA has initiated the waiver process. I think that just means that the DoDMERB has made the medical file available should the SA wish to seek a waiver after a DQ. The SA itself will notify you if they have initiated the waiver process.

How will you know if you receive waiver review? The SA will send you an email saying that they are requesting a waiver from their waiver authority.

The eyesight standards are unwaiverable for KP because of the USCG license standard. No exemptions or very limited for red/green color blindness (You could get one if you were an engineer.) Former professor and admissions board member told me during my brother’s application process. WP doesn’t even worry about eyesight. They just send them to go get corrective surgery while they are there. The unwaiverability is the killer.
