Im currently on a Hold list at the Merchant Marine academy. I don't know my chances yet so I am thinking about anything and everything. I am a recruited athlete, so I was wondering if Hold list candidates go to NMMI with a scholarship, or how that process works. Thanks for any help.

Im in the exact same boat. From what my coach has told me, If you do not meet the criteria academically, then they send you to prep school (NMMI) on a partial scholarship. They pay for about two thirds and you pay the last third. If you maintain a "C" average then you are offered an appointment. What sport are you being recruited for?

football, but I am qualified for admission. I was given a LOA last year, but am reapplying. This year I was told my scores were not initialy high enough to be offered an appointment at this time. Im hoping people from Nebraska accept appointments to other SA's. The coach said he would put me on the list for NMMI but I don't know if that means I'll be considered for a scholarship, or I will get one. The waiting is the worst part. What about you?

I know exactly how you feel. I was recruited for lacrosse. I know USMMA has a minimum SAT score that you must meet, If you didnt meet it then they will most likely tell you to do self prep at NMMI (no scholarship) but if you meet the minimun scores then they will most likely offer you the scholarship, Assuming they didnt pick you for a direct appointment. Dont quote me on any of this but im pretty sure thats how it works.

Did you apply last year? I played d and lsm in lacrosse. Im thinking abt trying out, do you know the coach or how to get in contact with him? I shouldve figured by ur name haha

good deal! yeah the coach is Tom Gill. He saw me at a tourny out east and contacted me a little while after. His email is on KPs website under lacrosse. Thats probably the best way to get in touch. You might also want to fill out a recruit question questionnaire. Hey, mabye well see each other at tryouts next year:thumb:

ya i heard, and 100 slots have already been given out for early admission. im a nervous wreck....

I hope both of you get direct appointments after all the "dust settles".

About 80-90% of the preps that come to NMMI are recruited athletes. To be a sponsored prep (with a scholarship) you do not need to meet the posted minimum standardized test scores (ACT/SAT). You do however, have to take both at least once after you get here.

The USMMA scholarship is for the second semester depends on your first semester grades. This will be explained to you when you get here and sign your contract. The ACT/SAT re-take is also part of that contract among other items.

I cannot emphasize enough that the USMMA focuses on your ACADEMIC performance here. Don't worry about sports - we will not allow your body to morph into a lump of fat. Worry about study habits, academic skills, and following the "rules" here.

Side note: If you write for your English professors the way you write on this board you are in for a big disapointment when grades come out.

Great post Major!

"I'm just texting" is not going to cut it with NMMI, USMMA, or any other college prof....(and laxkeeper is my DS!)
