So i’m happy that I have a spot at the Merchant Marine Academy, but the Naval Academy has always been my goal and not sure if i’ll make it this year. Anyone know what the process is from USMMA to USNA and if this ever happens?

Anecdotally, I am sure this has happened. But it is rare.

The more usual re-applicant route is 4-year college, take Plebe-like schedule, ideally participate in NROTC.

I think it’s happened maybe once or twice in the history of the schools. Only one I know is a guy who went KP class of ‘01 to USNA ‘02 named Brian Higgins. Got accepted to USNA in the winter and stuck around KP until recognition and then left. Not sure if he graduated USNA or not.

So two things: Is it just hard to do or is it just not seen a lot through mids at USMMA?
And should I just go to a civilian school and take ROTC if my real goal is USNA?

USNA recommends re-applicants take a Plebe-like college schedule. I’ve met plenty of successful college re-applicants at USNA. I have never met one who attended another SA. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but they are extremely rare.

If you participate in NROTC, you have another nom source available, along with moving toward a Navy commission.

From a search "Cmdr. Brian "Bearclaw" Higgins, from Atlanta, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned in May 2002."

But seriously don't do it. If you are just going to re-apply to the Naval Academy don't go to KP. KP is not a community college or commuter school where everyone is on the way out after a year. It's a place where people are very proud to be and will fight to stay, it's just a bad idea in my opinion.

So i’m excited to say I have a spot at USMMA but USNA has always been my number one choice and I will be expecting a turn down. Is it possible to apply to USNA from KP or is that something that usually doesn’t happen?

Did you see the responses already posted to your other thread asking this?

If you have integrity, you will do one of two things: accept your appointment to KP and commit yourself to it entirely, or decline it and give someone who truly wants to attend have the precious spot. Do not waste everyone’s time by treating KP like a community college. And, please know, KP is the most difficult Academy from which to graduate. If you are not 100% commited, chances are you’re going to fail and be disenrolled. There is absolutely no advantage, especially in USNA’s eyes, for you applying to USNA from KP.

Most candidates would understand that joining SA means that we (not I) can go to any types of battle fileds anytime in the future. When I was questioned on that, I did answer without any hesitation. (I am not perfect so there may be a delay, e.g., 0.00000000314 second)
At least, I have committed and will commit on those potential circumstances. From time to time, I feel that there are kinds of people I don’t want to go to a battle field together because I truly need a fellow “comrade” not a fancy “spectator.”
