Taking DS up for a visit this week. Yeah, I'm that crazy parent who is willing to drive across the country for a one day visit. Lol! He is so excited to finally see the Academy in person!

I had no idea until DS started the application process of all the work and moving parts that went into trying to earn an appointment. It's overwhelming. Talk about fortitude and perseverance! It's pretty impressive. Kudos to all our kids!

That is what parents do. That's our job. We visited Annapolis twice, West Point 3 times and Kings Point two or three times.

That sounds about right! I guess if DS is willing to put in the work to get there, I should be willing to haul him around for visits. We've been to Annapolis 3 times, but this our first time to Kings Point. It's a 30 hour drive from Texas. I told him if he wants to visit again in the spring, I'm booking flights!

G-Man'sAWESOMEMom, drive safely!!!

I am wondering why you are not combining the trip with a visit to the USCGA and USMA as well. It seems they are all within a 2 hour radius and since you are already going that far....

PS - a drive to the USAFA would seem like a drive across town after this trip!

You would think DS would want to visit USCGA and USMA too, but no-go. He's set on either USNA or USMMA. We played a baseball tournament at USAFA a few summers ago, but he did not like Colorado, so that Academy got scratched off the list in a hurry!

Kings Point is the only Academy DS is interested in. He visited once in the spring, for the day, and this time is an overnight visit. He just turned 18 on Thursday and is flying alone, staying at an airbnb. I have 4 other children and it didn't work out for me to go with him. When he was there in March with his Dad he told me that after seeing it he can't imagine himself being anywhere else. I really hope this works out for him.

Joriebelle - I hope your DS has a fantastic trip! Keeping my fingers crossed that we will get to add our kids' names to the appointment thread come Spring.

G-Man; if you plan a little ahead, United can get you to nyc and back for about 400-450. SW flies into lga and islip, I am sure their prices are about the same.

Well thank you! And best of luck to your son too! That would be awesome if both of their names make it to the appointment thread in the spring!

joriebell--I am going to guess here. But, G-man is from the great state of TEXAS. I am willing to go further out on a limb, and say G-Man is either deep south Texas, or a pretty good ways out in West Texas, but not as far as far west Tx. G-Man, how'd I do?

BTW, I am not a stalker--just gathering info from your post above....

Hi there, can you expand on why your son didn’t like Colorado/USAFA. I have a younger son (junior) who is looking at USAFA. Was it purely location or something about the Air Force culture?

Blessed. with regard our DS, we never even got to the culture. DS never even thought of USAFA. Always said he doesnt want to fly. Just never had the desire to do USAFA. And, never had the desire to do USCGA either. His comments were that he didn't want to be a policeman. No flames intended, etc., its just an indication of what he thought back when he was looking.

LOL! You are pretty darn close, golfindad! We live just west of Houston.

Blessedmom - As for USAFA, DS never had a desire to fly and he didn't like the location. He said Colorado made his skin felt like a prune, and he HATED playing baseball in the thin air. HA HA!

If you have time, I highly recommend Salvatore's Coal Oven Pizzeria (cash only) in Port Washington. It's owned by a family member of Patsy's & just as good. For a great steak, Peter Luger's in Great Neck, it's $$$$ & also cash only. Have a great visit!

Thanks for the quick reply, from what I’ve heard, you either love or hate Colorado Springs;)

We are also from Texas. What city do you live in?
