My son is interested in applying for the Naval Academy. He graduates HS in 2015. He had two operations for strabismus (eye muscle surgery) when he was maybe 3 or 4 years old. His vision is 20/20 and does not wear corrective glasses or contacts.

Is this something that would disqualify him for admission? Would he have to seek a medical waiver if not disqualified outright?

Thanks

I had the exact same surgery at age 5. I listed it on my medical forms in the "surgery" section and had no problems.

Nobody knows for sure what DoDMERB or USNA will do, but if there are no after effects, you are probably fine. However, I can advise you that you should retrieve those medical records from the doctor that performed the surgery and have them on hand to submit to DoDMERB or USNA if requested. It can be a pain sometimes to get the medical authorization/release form submitted and then get the records, especially if they're from a long time ago. Better to do it at your leisure now that rushed this Autumn or Winter.
Best of luck!

I also had the same surgery at age 11. As long as you have the papers and your vision is fine then all is well, at least with me it was.

Go Navy!
