USNA Admissions FAQs -- "What Are My Chances"

I have periodically checked on my application progress and I noticed that there is a date at the bottom that says "last updated". Would you know why that date continues to change every couple of days but nothing on the application is changing. At least nothing that I can see has changed. Is the Admissions Board already reviewing applications?

I suspect that date at the bottom is the latest universal system refresh time across all records in the CRM system. If there is nothing to update in your particular record, nothing will change.

The Admissions Board has been meeting since the start of the academic year. Appointments have been going out and will continue to go out even into June.

Thank you Capt MJ.

Nobody here can tell you whether USNA is giving more or less weight to ACT/SAT scores this year. One might be able to evaluate trends in the Class Profile over the years , but that is a lagging indicator. However, if all other things are equal , the Candidate with a higher SAT/ACT will have a better chance than the candidate with the weaker score. (Of course, the qualifier "if all other things are equal" is the great unknown --very rarely are candidates equal in all categories other than College Boards)
I am just back from a road trip and one of our stops was USNA for a historical tour . The tour guide actually said on the tour that USNA was contemplating not requiring SAT scores anymore. There was a young man with his parents who mentioned that he was applying for this year because this seems like a really “cool place”, he had not even started the application yet and the tour guide was talking to him saying things like “when you get here , you will stay in Bancroft” and “you really should have taken AP classes”. I thought it was wildly inappropriate for a civilian tour guide to be making comments regarding USNA admissions . She also made a comment regarding female midshipman saying they are “allowed “ to go to USNA now , as if it was a recent development . Then she turned to DD who is at Naval Foundation prep and told her she should think about applying like this young man . The young man who hadn’t even started his application, in January . The whole experience just really rubbed me the wrong way .

Sorry to hear it rubbed you the wrong way. I’ve been on a few of the Yard tours — before and during DD’s time there — and never noticed language such as this. Strongly suggest you assume positive intent here. It seems she was trying to be encouraging and optimistic. Perhaps a bit clumsy, but certainly not ill-intended.

These are volunteers who put a lot of time into learning USNA’s history and culture. Some have Navy connections, some don’t. But I do believe they all mean well.

I am cranky after the long car ride home . I just felt it was inappropriate for a tour guide to be giving admissions information on the tour and a bit misogynistic for her to assume that DD should follow the lead of a male who obviously had very little idea of how extensive the application process is . We have not visited USNA prior and were very much looking forward to this tour and it was disappointing . I’m sure the tour guide had best intentions .

Tour Guides aren't supposed to give admissions advice (Admissions holds daily sessions for candidates and prospective candidates for this purpose) nor should they be providing their views to the extent they are inconsistent with USNA policy. However, it's not a perfect world. A number of years ago, my DH and I were visiting USNA with friends and overheard a tour guide give his (antiquated) views of women at USNA.

If someone on a tour offered by USNA (vs. those offered by outside companies which aren't under the jurisdiction or control of USNA) is particularly offended by comments made, s/he should report it to the main visitor desk, in a polite way. Tour Guides should be making positive impressions on visitors.

I am sorry to hear this.

When I went on the tour when my son was at CVW, the older lady was so sweet.

I was wondering how notifications of an appointment are sent out? Is it via email, the portal or paper mail, does anyone know? Thanks! :)

Once they make a decision, they legally have to allow MoCs, etc. to contact the candidate to make the "award." Not every member does that. Many get no call at all. After a set amount of time, the offer will show up in your portal. And I believe you will get an email saying your portal status has changed.

Whatever you do, don't click "Decline" if you plan to attend! :p

The email isn't a guarantee. I didn't receive one for my appointment. You will eventually receive a physical copy of the offer in the mail later after the electronic version has been sent to you in your portal.

Okay, thank you!

Was trying to find where I read that (on here, I believe). I thought I recalled some Congressional or DoD document that specified the requirement.

Maybe it wasn't a "shall" statement, but a "should" or "will" allow time. ;)

I have seen several posters discuss notifications in their “portal” Forgive me for the naive ask but which “portal” are you referring to? Our DS has applied and to my knowledge the only portal he reviews is DODMERB. He received 3 Congressional Nominations.

The USNA candidate portal. Every candidate will have a portal where they can submit their application and track the progress of their checklist items.

Hi, currently in high school looking to eventually apply to USNA. I understand the emphasis placed on a rigorous academic schedule in high school such as honors, APs, etc. Moved up to honors math and gave it my all for a semester but course was too fast paced and I was retaining very little and at times on the brink of a failing grade. Withdrew passing between the two semesters and ended with a 99 average in the CP equivalent class. In all honors and APs besides math and currently have all As. I don't mean to overshare or be too personal but just wondering if CP math classes (despite good grades) would make an academic profile appear weak. Thanks
