Good afternoon,

My name is Joel Bertelsen. I am a 3Q candidate for the Naval Academy. I have a nomination from my Congressman (Honorable John Kline, District 2, Minnesota) as well. In my district is a recruited athlete who has signed a letter of intent to play football for USNA. Is he taking the nomination slot or do athletes go through a different process? Thanks.

While I don't know that it is carved in stone anywhere, it has been my casual observation over 19 years most recruited athletes tend to get their appointments from outside the normal channels.

Agree at least as far as football and basketball blue-chip athletes -- and maybe some others as well.

Joel, are you wondering if you still have a chance? Yes, you do, even if the football player's nomination was credited to your Congressman. You will just be assigned to some other source.

For example, my son was one of 3 young men and women nominated by our Congressman last year who now attend USNA. The Congressman also has 3 plebes (is that the right term?) at USMA and 6 at USAFA.

He could be taking the Nomination slot. If your Congressman uses the competitive method AND he is ranked #1 by the academy then he has the slot.
But, you still have a shot. At least 150 slots are reserved for alternates each year and often more are appointed.

i am a 3Qed candidate and have been anxiously waiting for the final word! How much sooner does the MOC know of your status rather then finding out by mail? Is your MOC obligated to notify you?

Our Senator called on like a Tuesday (actually staffer called)....said they get 3-5 days notice before packets are to be mailed from USNA. I think staffer said specifically that the packet would be mailed the coming Friday. Representative never called at all. Some notify, some do not. I can't imagine why they don't have a staffer call immediately....the chance to deliver good news to the home folks........but many do not call at all.

Parent of Blue Chip athlete here.

You go through the same process. All the Nominations, and the paperwork, and everything. The "recruited athlete" part is comparable to an LOA. If you get everything else checked off the list, you will get an appointment. You still must have a Nomination from one of the sources available to you. You still must have the grades. You still must have the leadership. You still must have the test scores. Now before someone goes off on me and tells me all about how wrong I am, there are avenues for "recruited athletes" who are missing academically. They have a path to NAPS or a Foundation school. These are exceptions to the rule. The majority of recruited athletes at USNA were in the top 10% of their HS class, Had great test scores, Had the total package, have shown a trait of leadership that puts them in contention. Just because you were a recruited gifted athlete, you better be able to show that you have the POTENTIAL to succeed at the Academy. If your package shows that, You MAY be able to remediate at NAPS. There are Athletes that were recruited that did not get the whole package together and are now going to school somewhere else.

Thanks for the responses everyone! Good to know I still have a shot. This is my second year applying and I was just curious.
