USNA Candidate Visit Weekend

I would like to second USNA 19 Dad's observation/recommendation. If your parents do not have experience with the service academies, they should attend. The admissions staff does a great job. As a parent, I understand we're all "clueless," but maybe a little less so after attending the CVW briefings.

Not all candidates receive them. Don't read too much into them. It doesn't add points to your admission. Candidates can request them and they do the best they can to grant them.

I am a reapplicant to the US Naval Academy and an official candidate for the Class of 2020. I received an email yesterday informing me that I have been invited to participate in a Candidate Visit Weekend. Needless to say, I was pretty excited being that it is invitation only. I do, however have a few concerns about the matter.

1. While completing the submission form, a question regarding if we are a "junior, senior, or post graduate" came up. I am a reapplicant, so I chose "post graduate" as I am a college freshman. Underneath this section it read "Unfortunately, if you are not a junior or senior, you are not able to attend". Does this mean I am not able to go?

My DD was a reapplicant for class of 2019, and she was offered a CVW this past Spring. She had to talk to her professors to arrange to miss classes at college, and attended. I don't know what her invitation said, because all she told me was "I'm invited to a CVW and I want to go." She is now finishing up Plebe Summer.

@CatChaser do you recall the time frame of the the CVW invite? my DS is a reapplicant and if he received an appointment would really like to go for a visit before making a final decision. but the time from seems tight and im not sure when CVW's are? march? i think college applicants dont even hear until Feb/march so it would be a scramble to arrange a visit (we dont live near MD)

I will add to this that they only extend offers of a few hundred CVW visits, and they are typically by invitation only. One of the reasons for this is that Plebes have a lot of pressure on their schedules, some Plebes don't qualify to host a candidate for a CVW (AKA: "a drag") because of schedule commitments and/or academic standing, and some Plebes don't volunteer to host a drag. Plebes are not ordered to host drags, in other words.

With that said, if you have been extended an LOA or a fully-qualified offer of appointment, you may indeed request a CVW visit.

I have read on this forum that regular candidates have requested CVW visits and received them - but that is not the norm - and based on this page, they reiterate that they are by invitation only by putting it in italics and bold font.

if an appointee would like to visit before making final decision and there are no CVW spots left, what other options are there? can they just do a day visit and walk around campus? maybe meet a professor or see the dorm situation, that type of thing?

Anyone with an ID can walk around the yard and take a tour. Your DS should have a BGO. I would ask if there is a Mid they know they could talk to and ask questions. Might even be able to take them to lunch while on the yard. If they get an appointment they can certainly ask for a CVW.

thanks!

most of the CVW attendees DO NOT have an LOA or an Offer of Appointment

CVW's are offered to many candidates who do not end up getting an offer. Many CVW invitations are to those candidates who did not get an invite to NASS. The current policy is that candidates may attend NASS or CVW but not both - although there are exceptions.

If you are a candidate, and want to attend a CVW and have not been invited then you should make you request known, contact your BGO or Admissions. Every candidate that I have request a CVW for has received an invite.

For this year's cycle it's too late, but for 2025 candidates, the time to request a CVW is July/Aug for the visit weekends in September and October.

Sorry it took me so long to get back. I believe my DD called (or emailed) and asked for a CVW.

There are apparently March and April CVWs yet. My DD who is a junior will be attending at the end of the month but the form gave options for March and April.
She received the invite at the end of December. I think her non-selection for STEM for 3 tries might have triggered it.

I would absolutely recommend going to a CVW—it really shows you what everyday life is like in the Brigade, without either romanticization or undue cynicism. Going to the classes is extremely informative and illustrates the academic level of rigor, and the quality of the teaching—it can also lead you to considering majors that you hadn’t previously thought of. It’s also just super fun—tagging along with and meeting the mids cemented my goal of attending!
