Hello everyone! I am currently a rising High School Senior. I plan on applying to the Naval Academy this semester, and I turned in my Preliminary Application yesterday. I’m just wondering the opinion of you all as if whether my stats are impressive enough for USNA admission.

My academic stats are:

3.90 Unweighted GPA/4.29 Weighted GPA

SAT Math: 530, SAT EBRW: 550, SAT Reading: 28, SAT Writing and Language: 27, Total Score: 1080

ACT Math: 20, ACT English: 23, Composite Score of 21

(I plan on retaking these tests for better scores)

Rank 22/697

I also have taken many AP Classes, such as AP Art History, APUSH, AP Eng Lang, AP World History, AP Bio, and APHUG. I have also taken plenty of Honors classes.

Extracurriculars: I have acted as

Treasurer for my school’s Class of 2020 for two years,

Asian International Association Club Treasurer for Seven months,

AP Club Vice President for one year,

MCJROTC Squad Leader for 3 semesters,

Asian International Association Culture Night Committee member for 7 months,

Ran as a distance runner for JV Track and field,

Ran as a member of JV Cross Country,

and played on the school Varsity Quiz Bowl team (also known as Academic League)

I also plan on joining the Robotics team and I am also an Autodesk Certified: Inventor User, as I have took an Engineering course in my school.

I also have completed 129 community service hours as I am an Altar Boy at my church, cleaned up my community, and helped in setting up a Filipino Cultural Festival.

I have some time left, and I am currently preparing myself physically for the Academy. I’d like to thank you very much for taking the time to read and to respond. :)

The active members of this forum are not on the selection boards, so can only provide opinions based on ancillary data, but I would recommend that you compare your stats to the Class Profile for the Class of 2022 - https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/_files/documents/ClassPortrait.pdf.

Your ACT/SAT scores are well below the published middle 50% scores. JMPO, but I would focus as much time as possible in preparation for your SAT and/or ACT retests.

Good luck. Thank you for your interest in serving.

Your ACT/SAT scores are well below the published middle 50% scores.

Your test scores loom larger than usual because, based on what you share here, you seem light on rigorous STEM classes. USNA prefers candidates who take the hardest STEM courses their school has to offer, e.g. AP level of Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Computer Science. So you'll need to prove that, regardless of test scores and seemingly light curriculum, you can handle USNA's heavy STEM focus.

None of us can tell you your chances. Compare yourself to the class profile as someone was gracious enough to include. See where you are below the averages. Agree your SAT scores are low and you seem light on the key items, Chem, Calc, Physics. Also listing all your ECAs and sports is one thing, but the key is how did you demonstrate leadership while in them? Titles are one thing to have like squad leader... but how did you lead? What did you do to lead? How did you stand out?

Another issue is sports. You note that you "ran" track. Does that mean you no longer run track? Sports seem a bit light, so you will want to max your CFA. Also, you should try to do organized sports (in or out of school) this year. Most, not all, successful candidates are very good in one sport and many do 2-3.

The odds are 1 in about 25 for applicants who finish the application.
Those test scores are not going to make those odds any better.

If you don't meet the minimum standards, USNA will not make you an official Candidate, and you will have your answer.
If they send you the ECandidate Packet Letter (with your candidate number), then that will be your indication to move ahead with this 9-month application process.

You need to retake those tests if you feel that you can score substantially better. This is just my opinion.

Your chances will depend a lot on who you are competing with at a local level in your congressional district. There is no way to know from year to year how competitive your district will be. In one year, a 1300 SAT with good sports and a good CFA may get you in. In another, a 1500 SAT, 3 Captian spots on varsity sports teams, maxed out CFA, and tons of extracurriculars may not be enough (I saw several of these this past year on the TWE thread). I agree with the above though. Your test scores need improvement.

My DS got waitlisted at the USNA this year with a 1400+ SAT (780 Math), 3 varsity sports (2x team captain), #2 in his class at a very competitive private school, high CFA score, etc. etc. All it takes is for one person in your district to have a higher WCS.

If you are wanting to serve, look at other SA's besides just the USNA too (unless you are set on the Navy). My DS was set on Navy too early on but that changed over time as he researched careers in all the branches of service. He ultimately applied to the USNA, USAFA, and USCGA.

1080 SAT will get rejected every time IMO. I know someone who had 1500 SAT, matching if not better extracurriculars, and a tri-varsity athlete, and he was rejected.

1080 will more than likely get rejected, but that might land someone in prep where they retake it. Bottom line... the minimums aren’t published. You will know if it isn’t high enough if they don’t open your portal. You can compare yourself to the class profile and see where you meet averages of a common item found in applicants. It’s a good way to measure yourself. See where you fall short to improve. Lots of suggestions on bringing up your math and strengthening athletics.

.
There are kids with very decent SAT/ACT scores in prep. With a 1080, the rest of the package must be very appealing.

Admission to USNA is not about "odds". There are so many variables that go into a successful application,, and the better the record with each of factors, the greater the likelihood of success. The only absolute is that 100% of those that don't apply (and complete the application), will not get in.

Look at the Class profile at USNA.edu, and it's pretty clear that 1080 SAT is well below the norm, and I really don't see anything that makes OP stand out from the pack.

You don’t need sunshine pumping. You need a lot better SAT score. Go to work! Study and prepare for that test. I really don’t think you’re competitive right now, but you could get there. You’ve got some work to do. Good luck to you!

I just thought some more about this post... OP, were you deemed competitive enough to receive an official application? In my past experience, without an "athlete package" in admissions, they won't even give you an application with those SAT scores.

> Your "past experience.....?" Reminds me of a joke about Ensigns and Second Lts'.

Seriously, there are several factors that go into whether a person becomes an "Official Candidate" or not, SAT/ACT only being one. There is little value, if any, in trying to figure out what the Official Candidate line is . That is a bare minimum to be considered, and frankly the candidate that is just over that minimum isn't going to be very competitive.

Agreed. I was just saying that with the limited information provided on the Preliminary App, SAT/ACT scores are one of the most important things I believe in determining whether or not a candidate will receive an app.

Just curious, what congressional district?

Oh no your ACT/SAT. Please prep well and retake. Try to get them all 30 or better in Eng and Math ACT. And 650+ on Verbal Math SAT. With your current Test Scores you have very very little chance IMHO.
