USNA Class of 2018 Appointment Thread

Permission To Report

Has anyone received additional information from the Naval Academy after they have accepted their appointment by either their portal or by mail?

DS received Permission to Report package on yesterday. His Portal shows a link for that information but the link doesnt work.

Is the PTR part of the BFE package or a separate package?

The BFE is essentially the initial notification of acceptance. The PTR is a separate package that has actual info about I-Day and such. I have been told that company assignments were also in the Permit to Report, but people that have gotten the PTR already for 2018 have said that they didn't get a company assignment.

Hi Spark!
The PTR is NOT part of the BFE package. It comes a few weeks after USNA receives your acceptance of their Offer. I'm sure that as time closes in, the PTR will be arriving sooner, rather than later.

The PTR link does not work for my son either...he gets a hilarious page that shows Bill the Goat eating the page!! Love the humor!

We were told that the Company assignments would come later...closer to I-Day.

DS got PTR yesterday. Company assignments made on IDay is his understanding.

...and we heard that they send those out prior to I-Day...both the Plebes and the parents get a letter stating which company they are in. (this was from a Plebe parent for CO 2017...he said it was helpful info. to know so the parents could plan their spot for the Oath of Office, as far as which side to sit on...it's getting exciting!!)

I know of people in c/o 2017 that recieved their company assignments a few weeks before I-day, however it does say something somewhere on the PTR packet that gives one the impression that that information would figured out on I-day.

Number of applicants | scholarship value

Has anyone gotten an idea of total applicants this year? Also, anyone gotten a ballpark of value of USNA appointment ... some figures I've seen place it btwn 425-450K.

The appointment letter for DD didn't say for USNA. However, USAFA's said it was $450K value, so I suspect it's along the same lines.

DH went to CVW with DD and he said that during a briefing, they were told the USNA value was around $180K.
It makes sense that USAFA is more expensive given they have to maintain gliders, powered aircraft, etc. Also explains why they are the smallest service (relatively speaking).

One figure is education, books, housing, etc the other adds pay, medical care, and the other goodies (like summer cruise) from my understanding.

Is this normal?

DS in an RA and had his LOA, but did not receive the MOC nomination. He was 3Q'd and received a superintendent nom. Because of "good, but not great" SAT scores, all throughout the process, we figured he would probably be going the NAPS route - and everyone was onboard with that scenario.

About 4 weeks ago, DS received his packet from admissions. And to our surprise, he was offered a direct admit. His GPA, class rank, AP classes must have been enough to make the cut. USNA Class of 2018 was the new destination.

About a day ago, all that has changed...and I've not seen anything like this situation posted before. Evidently, all of the superintendents nominations are receiving additional scrutiny and now 30-40 RA's who were offered direct admit, are being told that they need to go through NAPS. Seems like there is no option here, and DS doesn't want to 'rock the boat' and lose his spot...so NAPS it is.

DS and our whole family is still very honored by the selection....but talk about a heck of an emotional roller-coaster ride. My question is this - is this normal? Has anyone heard of such a thing before?

Thank you for your responses!

^^^Strange

I wonder if USNA Admissions has had to go back in and find direct admit slots for the Principal nominees they initially put on the wait list. Maybe your DS got bumped down to NAPS for that reason. Just a guess.

My understanding it's the Sups last year with a change in command coming for class of 2018/19. They may be reviewing all his outgoing Noms. Just a guess though.
