USNA CLASS OF 2024 Update-List-Yourself APPOINTMENTS

Ultimately, this is a competition. There are going to be some incredible candidates who are going to come in second. There is transparency. Candidates need to be strong academically, physically, morally, and have strong leadership. Candidates have to write a compelling essay and be able to go through interviews with their BGO and nomination committee. It's not unlike going for a job interview.

Is your child a stronger person because of the process they have gone through to apply to a service academy? Has your child learned to work hard to stretch themselves in areas that were outside of their comfort zone?

It hurts as a parent to see your kid work really hard for something and not have it come to fruition. It feels unfair. I can guarantee you that just having gone through this process and working to make themselves the strongest candidate they can be is going to benefit your child.

What are you looking for in transparency ? Open Admissions meeting ? Frankly, I don't think anyone wants to see how the sausage is made. The process is really pretty straightforward in most cases, and in almost 20 years of watching it, I really haven't seen any situation where I thought the integrity of the process was challenged.
Sure why not. Just check with AC the last poster was non-select last year top 25% by BGO and this year offered. AC said there are at least 15 in his area more qualified. AC also shared one female offered(recruited athlete) USMA sent TWE but USNA offered. Yes this is a process that is easily massaged for what you want.

By AC, are you referring to Admissions Counselor, or Area Coordinator for BGO's ? Who determines "more qualified" ? This is not and objective determination --- there are some objective factors involved, but at the end of the day, things like leadership potential, grit, and just gut feel aren't measurable.

I am sure that every BGO or person who works in Admissions can tell you about someone they thought should get in and didn't, and will readily point to someone that was less qualified that did get in. Those cases may be true. The system is not perfect by any means, and sure, some very good kids get left on the cutting room floor. I will also tell you, there are plenty of those "less qualified" candidates who turn out to be damn good Navy and Marine Corps officers.

Your a BGO an AC is Area Coordinator. "Who determines "more qualified"? That is the problem! USNA is I would politely disagree that grit can actually be measured according to a book recommended to me by Stephen Liszewski. Brigadier General, Director of Operations, USMC. Plans, Policy & OperationsNaval War College. Annapolis, Maryland. https://www.ted.com/talks/angela_le...power_of_passion_and_perseverance?language=en And "gut" feel can get one into very bad situations. Does the Academy say go with your gut feel or the data?
There are plenty of those "less qualified" candidates who turn out to be damn good Navy and Marine Corps officers.
Again that is subjective not based on data.
Sorry I just think we disagree.

Well sure, the "more qualified" may be true in the case of the BGO/AC but that is not how Admissions works. That is merely one input to the Admissions Board and I can assure you that there have been "Not Recommended" by a BGO get admitted and "Top 5" get TWEs. That is how the system works because the BGO does not have insight into the entire picture. I would compare the BGO interview report to my Commanding Officer or Reporting Senior writing a fitness report on an officer that is one of the primary inputs to a Promotion Board. Have you ever sat on a Promotion Board? Plenty of cases where the Reporting Senior really tried to get someone promoted but the officer is passed over for promotion.

Parents who are outraged by the fact that their kid did not receive an offer of appointment just need to be objective. I realize that is easier to say than to do, but the fact is that, barring EXCEPTIONAL applicants, there will always be individuals that are judged to be more desirable applicants, for whatever rationale, than Johnny or Janey.

You, and your child, do not automatically deserve to be informed of all of the specific points on the appointment metric that led to the admissions decision. Believing that you do is the pinnacle of hubris and an overwheening sense of entitlement.

You spins the wheel and you take your chances. That is how life works. There are no guarantees.

FYI @OldRetSWO I sit on my own board as the CEO of a multi-million dollar company. My company promotes based upon specific data that every employee is aware of.
AC/BGO is familiar with the candidate... he interviewed the candidate and also saw the essays and teacher recs.
One question are theMIDS aware of their order of merit? YES. Isn't that showing by data who is "more qualified?"
What you and others are saying is don't look at the scoreboard (data) instead who looks better (subjective) while playing the game.
Are we really sending the Navy the most qualified young men and women? Or are we sending them what amounts to the winners of a beauty pageant? Is it any wonder new Ensigns don't have a clue how to run a ship! Yet they do fit certain demographics. Let that sink in. how does your gut feel now. Just sayin' Guess that will give one a great feeling in their gut!

Sorry when it is the taxpayers money we can and should ask! but hen again I guess your name says enough spell check does wonders.

Are we extrapolating that since a BGO thinks one candidate was better on a slate than another - the academy process is wrong and there are many mistakes? And that a whole class is unworthy? And all graduates aren’t as competent?

But if that one pick was selected - all those problems go away?

Amen to that F, when you start this process you need to man up and accept what happens...period...
 like being a D-3 FB recruit!

Sorry no-one said wrong just sayin' there are situations where the Academy looks at certain candidates and makes decisions that could possibly be decisions that have strings, etc attached. If memory serves me correctly didn't you contact your MOC several times when your perfect "DS" was a candidate. Not one person on here has been able to say that the system is not able to be massaged and many candidates are not the top candidates. Except yours! Go back and reread your posts please. I am just giving my opinion in defense of @AREYOUKIDDINGME whom I agree with and the talking heads (you know who you are) who seem to know more than anyone else on this site are so damn cocky their kids got in. I have an Ensign but try to give others the true story as I see it. Sorry just disagree with what you and others are selling!

I never contacted an MOC.

And my son is a plebe - he earned it. That simple.

If you are telling me my son didn’t earn his place - you are wrong. The SA gave him an LOA. And a rare waiver.

I am not selling anything. You are grossly unfair attacking me or my son. I ignored @AREYOUKIDDINGME for a reason.

Not sure a BGO should be acting this way.

Sorry, but you are just wrong. Period.
