USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

Has anyone just deposited to a college as a back up since the final day is May 1st?

Not yet because we are still waiting to hear from his first 3 choices. Doesn't seem to make any sense to put a deposit on Plan D. If it was higher up the food chain or closer to May 1st, I'd think about it, but for now we wait. And wait. And speculate. And pray. And beg. And wait. And worry. Did I mention wait?

I did book a hotel and flights for I-Day and parents weekend because I know they will be hard to get as it gets closer. Fully refundable with no cancellation fees, so it doesn't hurt. While we wait...

My DS has a 4 year AROTC Scholarship to The Citadel and I have made the deposit. I’ve also made refundable hotel reservations for matriculation day and parents weekend. Holding off on airfare until 4/15. He’s been in CPR for awhile.
DS has a 4 year AROTC as well, and just got his acceptance to USC today, and we are thrilled for him. We will pay a deposit too. Waiting on USMA, USNA, and I also have hotels for all those things for both 🙂, cancel-able of course. I’m glad I’m not the only one…

Bear family did the same as The Hens, booked for I-Doc and PPW, just in case. If it is not to be this year then we will cancel. We will drive up so no need for flight tickets.

This. DS is waiting to hear from first 5 choices. He’ll hear from all within the next week (!) except ofc USNA is by 4/15 or so.

And for USNA he’ll wait til they tell him not to wait any more.

I wonder if anyone has been put on the wait list yet, or that comes later in the cycle - in April.
We are still CPR and patiently waiting and hoping. Finished and filed our taxes, but the distraction didn't help much.
Also, has anybody created a c/o 2027 waitlist thread?
😋
Last year I was waitlisted on 4/11, so waitlist notifications will come out closer to the 4/15 deadline. Good luck to your candidate!

When is Parent's Weekend? Feeling like I should book a hotel too! I already have one for I Day. Thank you!

Going forward, differentiate Plebe Parents Weekend (PPW) from the Parents Weekend for 2/C midshipmen held in the fall. If you’re browsing past posts/threads, that will eliminate confusion. I think PPW dates for this year have been tentatively identified in several threads already.

Keep watch on this page when it updates for Class of 2027:

Hi, I'm from CT also. My DS is still CPR. At the Blue and Gold Dinner at the Officers Club in Hartford we sat with a young man and his mother who said that he had already received an appointment. That's the only one from CT that I have heard about.
My DD is still waiting from CT!

Yes! Have your backup secured!!

April 15 is a target date to let everyone know where they stand: yes, no, or a small number of waitlist (which requires an affirmation on the candidates part). Last year, it was a little later than April 15….if you look at last years threads.

Imo, the biggest mistake a person can make, is not have a solid alternate plan. Meaning, deposit paid. Housing secured etc. every year there are kids/parents scrambling and upset/stressed bc they didn’t have backup plans (omg 😱 WDYM the dorms are FULL??? Where will Jimmy/Julia live???)

Don’t overlook the significance of having a smooth transition to Plan B. There will be a lot of TWES that go out. Making it this long, does not ensure an increased chance of an appointment. True, you are in it until you aren’t. But the nature of how this process has to happen (settling slates, etc) means that there are people here that won’t be offered appointments this cycle.

And it’s why it’s stated over and over and over (….and over), “have a solid alternate plans”.

To each their own, but with my sons academic, athletic, community service, and family commitments am thankful he focused on the naval application. As to backup plans, with his football and wrestling schedule…and his isolation he didn’t have time. Has never made a B, has never received a discipline referral, and qualifies for ZERO financial aid due to the fact that me and his mom work. However it goes he will figure it out, if it is to be figured out. He has taken every advance class offered at his HS, has college comp and algebra in his pocket.

Next month his congressman is having his annual academy day…and he (and his little brother ) are much more knowledgeable of the process now. My applicant (cpr) will go to the meeting and get answers from the navy rep there, as well as all the other academies.

My son only seriously applied to USNA. As a backup plan, he secured a NYS state school where his 70 plus hours community college would have transferred in. He would have graduated with his bachelors when he was 20. A good law school at 23.

The truth is plan b (and c and d) doesn’t take much time to put together along the way.

This is kind of where we are too. I'm an attorney and so is my ex-husband. We don't make millions and I'm still paying my own student loans. We aren't eligible for anything other than merit and being top 15% of his class, 3 sport athlete for 4 years, NHS, tons of leadership, etc doesn't qualify my son for much in terms of merit. So his hopes are pinned on his dream being realized and becoming a Naval Officer either through USNA, NAPS or NROTC. And we wait. And wait. He's been accepted into a handful of schools where he will go if he is turned down from USNA and NAPS and qualifies for NROTC. If not, he got into a school he likes well enough but that doesn't have an NROTC program and they offered him a little merit-based assistance. But not locking down Plan D isn't going to hurt at this stage because it isn't like he's losing his dream on that one. So we wait. Not much longer now, I guess.

We are still waiting to hear from USNA and had this backup plan discussion last night. On decision day, if we still haven’t heard, we are going to accept for his second choice (our flagship state school) and pay the housing deposit. If we end up out that money, then we do. He’s happy either way because he will not have any debt and that has been his primary priority.

Our State U housing deposit is fully refundable, if they do not attend the university. BC legally, non-students cannot live in student housing. So once the student disenrolls, the deposit is refunded bc the contract for housing (and meal plan, bc done through the department of housing) is void.

My late appointed Mid had contracted for housing, including meal plan, and had his dorm. And got everything back except I believe $30 non-refundable application fee.

Deposits may not be as impactful as one thinks. And it’s for sure comforting to have plan B, ready to go, if needed. Vs not.

I’m not talking about paying deposits at 4 institutions. Hopefully no one needs back up plans. But the reality, is that some will. Good luck everyone.
