Now that the first appointment post has been made, I am doing a running rendezvous (formation flying speak) which tucks this thread in tight with @Capt MJ's USNA Class of 2027 Appointment List. The hope is to keep the ’27 Appointment list from getting clobbered with anything other than appointment news, congratulations, and music interludes.

USNA 2027 candidates, and interested parties, put your speculating and comments in this thread to reduce radar surface clutter on the 2027 Appointment List.

Good luck to all candidates in your quest for an appointment!

You are a good shipmate. Grazie mille.
Form flights are fun, I’ve heard.

I may have been in breach of thread etiquette previously, so thanks for creating this. I'm curious if more knowledgeable folks know if the Dodmerb outage is going to cause significant delay issues? I can't imagine what they are dealing with.

I received a LOA on October 1. I have passed every test and check except for my nomination which I will interview for in December and find out by the end of the year. Are my chances high enough to be able to make plans to attend next semester or is there still a good chance I could not receive an appointment?

No one can really tell you that. We don't know who is applying in your district/state, or how competitive you are in comparison to those applicants. You will always be advised to have a solid Plan B-Z and continue to stay healthy, out of trouble, and academically sound. Congrats on your LOA, keep preparing for your interviews.

My son got an LOA for c/o '25 in November of that cycle. He did not get a nom. He got his TWE in the last wave in May for that entrance year.

Lesson learned? You can not count on a appointment until you see it there in your portal.

Knock your nomination interviews out of the park, and be sure to let them know you have an LOA that is only pending on the nomination (didn't help my son - we are in a super competitive district and the nomination team may have just figured the Academy would find one for him - but it is still a critical thing to mention).

This is a VERY important point. People assume an LOA is a "golden ticket." Not always. Unless you're eligible for a (non-competitive Presidential nom), you need to work really hard to ensure you get a nom or the LOA may be worthless. Moreover, in some areas, there may literally be more LOA candidates than there are slots for noms, so even a super-competitive candidate may wind up without one.

As with every element of your application, all you can do is your very best. Just don't assume that, with an LOA, either a nom or an appointment is guaranteed.

Quick question for the group, how often does the board meet to review applications and award LOAs/Appointments?

Multiple parallel processes. They don’t meet, and someone dashes out of the room with a list to update portals. The Board probably started meeting around the start of the academic year. They look at records and determine if the candidate is admissible. In parallel and intersecting processes, class-building
decisions are made by other Admissions team members about who will get offers of appointment, what nom source they will eventually be charged to, how many appointments will be offered so as to get a yield of acceptances in the target class size range for the year, etc.

A candidate could get everything in by October and still wait until April or beyond. It can be a loooonnggg wait.

I see, I just wasn’t sure if the portals all updated at the same time each week, or just randomly.

No known rhyme or reason for updates that I could tell after two cycles for my son. He got stuff in the mail before it showed up in his portal one year. :p

I believe they update when they have new data for each individual candidate. Not sure, but that seems to be what I have seen with my kid and based on people posting.

CAPT MJ is correct... Admissions Board typically meets weekly, beginning in September, but they only determine whether a Candidate is Adsmissions Board Qualfied. To be considered for appointment, and Candidate must also be Physically Qualified (CFA) and Medically Qualified (aKa 3Q ), and have a Nominiation, From there, a different office, Noms and Appointments does the hard work of determining who is most qualified among the persons who are 3Q and have a Nomination.

I see, I just wasn’t sure if the portals all updated at the same time each week, or just randomly.
Completely random --- the timing of the Admissions Board review is completely irrelevant, as the gap between getting the Admissions Q (which you will never know) and the decision by Noms and Appointments could be months. (Keep in mind, for most Candidates, Noms and Appointments has to wait until all Candidates from a particular Nomination slate have completed their applications and have been reviewed by the Admissions Board). In addition, USNA gives notice to the MOC first and gives the MOC a few days to notify the Candidate personally before updating the portal.

The bottom line -- RELAX and worry about what you can control. I can predict with a degree of certainty that many on this Board will posting on this thread that they are pins and needles checking their portal every hour during the month of March and April, waiting for that decision... (Go back and read similarly titled threads for the last 5 years). I know waiting is hard ..but there is not benefit to dwelling on it and worrying about timing.

With the second poster on the '27 appointment thread, @Old Navy BGO's wise counsel is spot on. Keep working your contingency plans. Here's hoping the "treats" keep rolling in during October and beyond. Continued good luck to all.

Most candidates will require an MOC nom. Most MOCs don't make their nom decisions until December. USNA often waits until all noms for a state (Sen and Rep) are in AND until all packets (or at least the competitive packets) from each slate are complete. Put all that together, and it's often early January at the earliest. Thus, most candidates who get good news don't hear until late January through early March.

While there may be rhyme or reason to when Admissions looks at different slates or states, none of us here has been able to figure it out. IOW, it's not clear to any of us why someone in NJ receives an offer of appointment before someone in California. Or why someone in TX District 3 hears before (or after) TX District 10. Or why someone who was CPR in September hears after someone who completed their package in late December.

If you try to read the tea leaves, you'll only drive yourself nuts.

[As an aside, I think it was actually easier in the "old days" before the Internet, when it was all a black hole. We sent in our stuff using snail mail. We waited. One day, something appeared in the mailbox. You didn't know when anyone else heard or didn't hear. Still nerve-racking, but not the hour by hour drama that occurs today. Sometimes TMI is just that.]

Yep, the second poster is still working on contingency plans. You just never know what is lurking around the next corner. He has MOC interviews with two other SAs in play scheduled as well as an NROTC interview. Something as simple as an injury can throw this all out of whack. Did the same thing with DS1. A little skepticism goes a long way toward being prepared.

For what it’s worth, I’m currently attending a CVW with my son, and the Dean of Admissions told us that they are meeting every Thursday to review candidate files.

Also should add, this place is amazing! Praying I get to return here with my son on June 29!

Standard procedure every year since I started as a BGO over 30 yrs ago. It is every Thursday from around Labor Day until they have gotten through everyone and since the deadline for applications is 31 Jan, it is (by necessity) well after that.

Haha, I went to CVW this weekend too and remember him telling us that!

Went this weekend with my DS this weekend. He got really sick. He said everyone in his company was company was coughing. They cancelled PT - cuz everyone was sick. I don't know if other company's were cancelled. Other than that he really liked it. He has an LOA from USMA since August. Has had has his USNA completed since labor day, but nothing. Can someone expound upon what was posted above -- everyone on the slate has to be evaluated first?
