USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

As I wait and speculate and try to stop looking at the watched pot, I look at the list of candidates who have received their good news grow and started to wonder about the undecided ones. I know a few have applied to multiple service academies and are in the fortunate position of being able to decide between more than one. But what about the others? Just watching how hard my son worked for this and knowing what goes into the process of applying to a service academy and that he'd likely give up a body part for a USNA appointment....what makes someone go through this whole process and still be undecided at this point?

@SnootyHen My DS has dreamed of going to USNA since visiting Annapolis in the 8th grade. It's #1 on his list, with a huge lead on #2. If he was offered an appointment to USMA or USAFA, he would also be undecided because his heart is set on USNA. Maybe those who've been offered appointments to USNA but are undecided just have a different #1, and still holding out hope :)

Yeah I won’t be able to answer your question rly but I personally want to go to USMA than USNA so that’s why I’m undecided. I’m waiting for rest of my decisions to come back.

DD declared in the 8th grade that she wanted nothing more than to attend USNA. And she received offer of appointment! But she waited to accept because she wanted to be absolutely sure. It is, after all, a nine-year commitment if you see it through (at a minimum). She also was being wooed by USMA, which offered benefits of which she was not initially aware. She briefly entertained the idea of a normal college experience (peer pressure will do that) with a public Ivy and ROTC scholarship awaiting her. And like all high-school seniors, she was a bit nervous, tense, fickle — it happens to the best of them.

When the time was right, she indeed accepted. And we all felt good that she had given it the full consideration it deserved.

Candidates who receive offer of appointment are given until May 1 to decide. They worked extremely hard to land that offer, so they've earned the right to use the time allotted and to be sure of their decision. In the meantime, they’re not depriving another worthy candidate of an offer. USNA makes more offers than will be accepted, managing to a carefully calibrated yield target. It’s not as if a candidate turns down their offer and a new offer immediately goes out to the next in line. Not at all.

By the way, indecision never really goes away. Just about every plebe considers quitting at some point. Just about every mid hesitates a bit before 2-for-7. It’s perfectly normal. And they’ve earned that right to waver.

@SnootyHen, a myriad of considerations could make a candidate undecided at this point. As mentioned by @MidCakePa, USNA asks that a candidate accept the appointment by I May. That’s a little more than three months from now. Perhaps USNA is a second choice and their wait is for a USAFA or USMA appointment. I recall a candidate, a few cycles back, that received an appointment but turned it down and accepted a scholarship to MIT. Others, initially, may have liked like the idea of the military. Perhaps now they are thinking long and hard about the appointment offer. As the saying goes - Be carefull what you ask for, you might get it! With the quality of candidates applying to the service academies it is safe to assume they will have some very good options to consider. Good luck to your son as he waits.

Hi everyone,
I’m new here and posted this question but don’t know where! How long does it take normally for the nomination to populate in the portal? Transcripts took forever but if deadline is 31 Jan, shouldn’t the nomination be there pretty soon??

That’s the deadline for elected officials to submit their slates. Not a deadline for you or your application.

Your deadlines only relate to what you have control over.

Your noms may be there, just not posted for the candudate-facing portal yet.

They’ll be posted.

And if Senator Gladhand submits a few days into February, that slate won’t be thrown into the e-trash.

Some have their heart set on an academy they have not yet heard from. Some haven't made a decision on which academy they have received offers from suits them best, yet. Others are awaiting ROTC decisions - the ability to go to a "normal" school, enjoy more freedom than an academy, and still become an officer... has some appeal, for sure.

There is no advantage to accepting early just to do so. They should take the time to make the best choice possible for them. Once they have made their decision, though, they should proceed down that path to open up any slots they may be holding that others would be able to slide into.

I may have been in breach of thread etiquette previously, so thanks for creating this. I'm curious if more knowledgeable folks know if the Dodmerb outage is going to cause significant delay issues? I can't imagine what they are dealing with.
I see, I just wasn’t sure if the portals all updated at the same time each week, or just randomly.

I am at a loss at everything. I am not even able to follow these threads well. My daughter received her LOA. We are waiting somewhat impateintly for Medical to clear. Very Nerve Wracking.

Hang in there. Control what you can control. You'll likely get a lot of good advice from the "veterans" of the process.

Have you found The Acronym List on the SAF home page?

My DS got his appointment early february and wanted to push the accept button that day. Nervous parents made him wait until all his other application results came back (April) to fully decide but he already decided, probably when he was little.

@Dragomir I just went back and read your story from an earlier post. I am so inspired! You achieved your dream, and I am so proud of you (even though we’ve never met!) You are a great example of perseverance and determination and I know you will be a success at whatever you do in life! All the best to you.
