USNA Class of 2029 Waiting, Speculating, Hoping

I wonder when we will hear of the first appointment offer? I thought we would see one by now.
There was one mentioned received. Don't recall where but poster chose to not list on the DIY thread apparently.

The USNA website encourages all candidates to apply for the VP nom. It’s open to all. VP staff has no hands-on role. USNA manages the selection. Five appointments may be charged to this nom authority. Based on what we have seen here in the annual appointments thread, VP noms tend to be given late in the cycle. A working theory is they are given to candidates they want but who were unable to obtain a nom. But someone always gets them!
I remember last year, we saw a VP nom and the candidate turned it down. Of course their choice, but man it stings to see 1 of the 5 unicorns bolt the barn and not get used. You would think that admissions would be a little more certain that it was going to be used if they used one of those UNO cards.

You don’t know who that VP nom was ultimately charged to. Just BC that candidate declined their appointment, doesn’t mean no one was charged to “their” VP nom.

No insider knowledge, but I’m confident that no SA controlled noms go unused.

I personally had a PM conversation last cycle with someone who reached out to me for guidance based upon my kid's experiences and who was told directly by admissions that they were being given the VP nom to satisfy their LOA. And they accepted the appointment. Not sure if they were actually charged against it, but they had an LOA without a nom up to that point.

In other words, the VP nom didn't go to waste.

I have a gut feeling that because I didn't go to summer seminar or do something in that vein my chances are gonna be slim...

Totally different things. There are tons who don't go, or didn't even apply to the summer stuff, that get appointments. NASS is a marketing tool.
I didn't apply to NASS mostly because my parents were pretty adamant about me missing school, but I kinda feel like that sounds like an excuse? I also live in WA so it also would have been a little inconvenient travel wise. I did visit the academy over the summer on a trip to the east coast.

*Most* of an appointed class did not attend NASS. And IDK the percentage, but many who do attend NASS are not offered appointments.

It’s a tool for you to decide about USNA. Not the other way around (it’s not for USNA to ‘preview’ you).

Do not worry about this at all.

Yes, DD did apply for VP nom. Her BGO HIGHLY encouraged it. That encouragement came before she got her LOA, FWIW. DD is also a recruited athlete, which was part of the BGO VP nom discussion. I'm new to all of this, so I don't know how this all plays together.
And welcome new member of just over 24 hours!

Hey guys! Haven’t posted in a while, but I got some exciting news this week. I was medically qualified, and I think my first nomination interview went really well. I was told that I would know about my nomination status by Thanksgiving, so that’s coming soon. The nomination is the last thing I need to fulfill my LOA requirements. Crossing my fingers, and good luck to the rest of you all!

I hope that your nomination, along with family, will be the perfect reason for giving thanks this Thanksgiving Day and beyond.

For those seeing all the posts about LOAs – do not despair! As posted by many trusted SAF members in the know, most candidates do not receive LOAs. The goal is the appointment. For all of you facing upcoming service academy nomination interviews, prepare, be confident, and be yourself. Break a leg.

I'm feeling weirdly trepidated by this experience. I have a gut feeling that so many people are better than I am and that there's gods applying when I'm a mere mortal, since I'm not like an all-state athlete or anything along those lines. Just means I'll have to do whatever I can, though. Not gonna give up, I got a shot and I'll make it count.

Don’t lose sight of your goal or let doubt creep in. Insecurity breeds insecurity. You don’t know the intangibles. You need to remember that they are building a whole person candidate class. Not all are team captains. Not all had 4.0s or 35 ACTs.
Keep swimming and make them tell you no.

I’ve posted here, often, that imo one of the pitfalls of this amazing SAF, are people reading the amazing resumes and thinking ‘wow, I’m not good enough’.

And I’ve also stated that if my two read around here, I wonder if they would have thought they were competitive. Now? Both are THRIVING. But neither were class president. Or top 1pct of class. Each were flawed, but had strengths, too.

USNA builds a class of people they can shape into future Naval Officer. And they are really good at identifying the ‘stuff’ a person needs as a foundation for that build up.

As others stated, all you can do is be the BEST you, and show that. Every year, candidates who look great on paper are passed over. And some a that don’t look as good on paper are appointed.
There is more to the WCS look than what’s on paper. You got this!!!

PS: Doubt is normal. Use it for fuel 😤
