USNA Class of 2029 Waiting, Speculating, Hoping

Side note, the garrison cap can get super dirty wearing it everyday day with flight suit
That sweat/oil stain in the front and the sides where fingers touch it on and off. I always had 3 in rotation. Ironed them too after washing. Learned the habit from DH, who was fastidious about his as a pilot.

I need to get another one probably. Mine is getting the sweat strip at the bottom of the front. Although I have seen students with way worse ones than mine

the khaki uniforms, the civilian staff at the tailor shopped refers it to garrison uniform because the cover is called "Garrison Cap" i think. I would normally refer it to as the plebe summer uniform, because that's the uniform that our detailers were in
As you've been told, the cap is "garrison" and fun fact: The Navy has had other color Garrison caps and not just in ancient history. There was a Navy Blue Garrison Cap within the past 20 yrs that was primarily worn by enlisted folks. I saw a few folks wearing a Green version to match the Aviation Green uniform that used to be authorized.

I wore a navy blue (the blue-that-is-all-but-black) garrison cap as an OC at Navy OCS, with an anchor device. Went with the king-sleeves winter working blue we wore.

I know that I won't get a legitimate argument that the Marines don't already have the Naval Service uniform contest in the bag, but you can't tell me that this was not one helluva good looking uniform. Granted, you can hear the souls of long passed Marines scream in agony over a hand in the pocket, but that is a sharp look.

The boat cloak, casually flipped back over left shoulder to show the chest candy and wings of gold. Plus rakish tilt of the dark cover. Salty all the way.

Is that something in the pocket? Silk pocket square perhaps?

“Garrison Cap” has been around since the last century, much nicer name than the saltier Fleet term for it. I will let @blinkus have the fun of researching it. Clue: p

Garrison uniform, uh, 🤔. Khakis, I think. USNA can be its own rabbit hole at times, though.

If you want to see salty perfection in a garrison cap, note the perfect press, angle and wear, withjaunty little dents strategically placed, Blue Angel style.

I don't think they'll need to do much research. The picture and clue are sufficient 🤣

My DS had three interviews with congress/senators this week, and his applications are complete. He is medically qualified, passed CFA, and he is happy with his test scores. He completed apps to USMA, USNA, and USAFA. He isn’t quite sure yet if his #1 choice is USAFA or USNA.
Now, we wait!
He felt great about two of the interviews, and one was tough. They told him he should know about nominations by the end of December.
He is relieved that everything is out of his hands now, and he has a backup plan in place.
This forum has been so helpful!! I can’t wait to see those appointments roll in, and I hope he is one of them!

This is a good way to roll with it all.

I'm not even that sure what constitutes a good interview. I had my BGO interview a while back, what are some signs that it went well and what are some signs that there's a lot I need to work on?

If you've already completed your interview..look forward, not back ...

There are a lot of threads on SAF about BGO interviews. Some of the advice is good, some bad. Truthfully, the good advice is mostly common sense and applies to any job interview , ie. dress appropriately, be yourself, don't try to answer the questions the way you think the interviewer wants (trust me, we can tell), think before you answer, etc. If you walk out of an interviewer and think that 1 1/2 hours went fast, then you did just fine.
Also keep in mind, except in the extremes, the BGO interview isn't going to get you in or keep you out of USNA,

I wouldn't worry about it. Just do the best you can and present yourself in the best possible light. I didn't think my BGO interview went great, in fact I was pretty pessimistic about my chances of getting in after my BGO interview. My BGO told me that our area was really competitive and the best I could do was update my application if anything new came up.

Same here, except mine also needs a waiver (something that is waiverable)My son had his last MOC interview yesterday. He said it was the best yet, all of his have been very conversational and he has not been nervous. The hardest was the ALO which was long and more of a barrage of questions, and on zoom which made it more difficult. This MOC’s office presented him with a flag after this interview, which was unexpected and nice. I think our state is fairly competitive, however our district is more rural. The senator’s office emailed him last week confirming his order of preference (which changed after 1 LOA.) He’s feeling cautiously optimistic. Just has NROTC interview tomorrow and NROTC PT test, and two more colleges to apply to.

I’ll just add many BGOs understand this is probably the first “interview” many candidates have been through. I think I can speak for many BGOs, but the point isn’t to look for someone extremely polished…it’s great if you are, but there will be plenty of opportunities to work on these skills at USNA and down the road. As others said, be yourself and answer truthfully. This is an opportunity to discuss things that the online application doesn’t cover or to extrapolate on application data you have provided.

Proud, humbled and ecstatic, USNA Official visit went as well for DD as the Amish Market ‘Donut Course’ did for me - thank you Capt MJ.

Follow-up call with coach this week became an LOA on Saturday - Happy Dance performed but steadied due to 0 of 2 for MOC nom with 1 left.

Call today was an MOC Nom - DD got it! Oh yeah!! Already Q’d for medical & CFA. USNA is her only choice, USCGA has been on the list but latest visit made it clear she wanted a career in the Navy.

Waiting until she sees it all in the portal to post, but oh wow I can hardly catch my breath I’m so proud, humbled and ecstatic. Thank you all for giving your time to this forum it’s has been such an immeasurable help and guide in this process. Looking forward to cheering on and learning with all of you during this journey. Go Navy!

It was the Amish donuts for sure - many more in future, it seems.

Your DD’s journey is rolling out nicely - LOA, nom, measured happy dance now, full happy dance when an appointment should show up between now and May. Let’s hope sooner.

Keep tending the alternate plan. If an appointee gets an injury or illness that DQs them between now and I-Day, Admissions usually works with them on a re-admit plan for the next class, if they expect to become Q again.

Hey all! Super excited today as I received my nomination. That is the last requirement I need to fulfill my LOA, so I guess that means I will see an appointment in my portal soon! So grateful, and I hope you all have a great holiday and good luck to everybody in the application process! I know it can be daunting, but we will all get through this!

“Soon” can still be between now and May. But this is outstanding news, so just bask in it.

If you don’t have a professional voice mail prompt set up m, do that. You never know who is going to call your phone to tell you you have an appointment, regardless of nom type.

Kid has yet to wear his khakis. Unless you are a detailer on the Yard, or taking summer classes, I think you rarely use them.
My daughter got hers, tried them on and she could have fit two of her in them. Took them for alterations and they thought for sure she had someone else’s uniform and weren’t entirely confident they could alter them to fit her and have them still look good. Not the 1st time that happened and I’m sure not the last. We get a good laugh every time she has to have alterations done.
