Hello all,

I applied last year to the Naval Academy and heard back the first week of April that I had been denied. I applied out of the first Congressional District in Virginia. I am currently on a Marine Option NROTC scholarship to Virginia Tech and I'm majoring in political science. I did not plan on reapplying to the Naval Academy until very recently, and as a result I am not currently taking Calculus, Chemistry or English ( My AP scores validated those classes) even though everyone I've spoken to says your schedule should mirror a plebe year schedule. My first question is: am I pretty much screwed because of my schedule? I am doing well in my current classes and I'm taking 17 credit hours (including Mandarin Chinese) but not any STEM classes. I figure I could take those classes during the winter semester; how should I proceed as far as making my schedule more competitive in time to be considered for the Class of 2023?

Second question: How much do my high school qualifications matter the second time around? Here were my qualifications:
  • 3 nominations ( Congressional, Presidential, JROTC)
  • 4.3 GPA, 1430 SAT
  • Varsity XC, Track, Baseball
  • Commanding Officer of NJROTC unit
  • Founding member of the political science club
Is this go-round going to focus more on my college activities (which are severely limited due to Corps of Cadets freshman restrictions)? Any other advice on proceeding in my situation is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What follows is JUST MY OPINION, so take it for what you paid for it.
Demonstrating that you can handle a full college course load goes a long way to turning heads on the Admissions Board, I believe.
The fact that you decided to go to college and have already secured an NROTC scholarship (and that you are smart enough to capitalize "Marine"), carries some weight with me (but alas I am only the Dad of a Plebe, and I don't call any shots!).

So logistically and organizationally, can you complete the applications for MOC nominations within the deadlines? I don't care how fast you get an application done, if you don't have a nomination, it's game over. You still have until January to get your Academy application done, but you may only have DAYS to get MOC nomination applications in.

Get on those right now, because without a nomination this whole discussion is moot.
Also - all NROTC units are able to issue three (3) nominations - so you have another nomination source this time around.

And the only way you're screwed is if you don't try. Nobody here can say with any certainty that the classes you have right now are going to sink an application. Just get the best grades you can and show them what you're made of.

Chase your dream and let the chips land where they may. It is suggested that you take a similar class schedule but this is not an absolute.

My DD re-applicant had nothing that looked like a Plebe schedule because like you she had the AP credits. She had three science classes with labs, ROTC, a Dance class as well as a University required wellness class. On top of that she was a DIV I athlete.

It is more important to do well in what you have than worry about if you checked the right box.

If you really want to attend USNA ... get moving and get the application going. It's not too late, and 100% of those who don't apply don't get in.

The gouge is clear , do well in an strenuous academic program that approximates the typical Plebe schedule. That being said, that ship has already sailed, so all you can do is emphasize your strengths. You have good tickets from high school, and the fact that you validated the entry level STEM courses is a good sign that you can handle the academics. The lack of STEM is easily explained, and your probably not the first person with the same profile. Bottom line, go out and Kick A$$ in everything you do, get your NROTC CO recommendation, and you've got a chance.

Good Luck.

Honestly if you're satisfied with the VA Tech Corps and financially can swing it with a Marine Option scholarship I'd say drive on Marine get your commission in '22 and hit the fleet running

I agree with what's been said here, and I'd like to add that a classmate of mine who was a re-applicant took only political science courses at college, so it's definitely possible. Go for it, and be sure to mention to your BGO that you understand and are ready for the heavy STEM load that you'll have to take if you do attend.
