I have the same question. Did you find out if this is the correct way to address mail. It seems backwards based on past years.
The directions you got are correct. Company number assignments hold for Plebe year (and thereafter, except for shuffles, shotguns and other reassignments).
The lettered Platoon labels are only for Plebe Summer (i.e., 1st and 2nd Companies are Alpha Platoon, 3rd and 4th Companies are Bravo Platoon, etc.).
The paired-up numbered Companies will remain as "sister companies" after Plebe Summer.

During PS, there are 15 companies, Alpha through Papa (no Juliet), and 30 platoons - two platoons per PS company. Thus, PS Alpha Company includes First and Second Platoons; Bravo Company includes Third and Fourth Platoons, and so on. (To complicate matters further, there are also Port and Starboard Battalions in the Fourth Class Regiment. Port Battalion includes Alpha through Golf Companies, and Starboard Battalion is Hotel through Papa Companies. There are also smaller scales of organization. Within each platoon are typically 4 squads of ~10-12 plebes.)
During reform, plebes join the ac year company corresponding to their PS platoon number. Thus, members of Alpha Company, First Platoon join First Company and so on.

Yes, I understand that the lettered platoon are only for plebe summer; what I was referring to was the mailing address. Last year and I believe in years past the plebe mailing address was:
MIDN Jane Doe
A Company 2 Platoon
Annapolis, MD...
This year address format sent out to all plebes is:
MIDN Jane Doe
2 Company A Platoon
Annapolis, MD....
My question was why did they flip flop the number/letter designation.
LongAgoPlebe, I definitely will defer regarding history, but am staring at the email we received. Perhaps there was a typo in that email (and also the emails others here are asking about).
Here is a cut-and-paste (leaving out my DD's name) of what it said regarding DD's Plebe Summer assignment:
"Your midshipman has been assigned to 21 Company, L Platoon. This information will assist you in identifying the location of your midshipman during Plebe Summer should the need arise. Beginning 2 July, your midshipman may receive mail at the following address:
MIDN [FIRSTNAME] [LASTNAME]
21 Company L Platoon
Annapolis, MD 21412"
Someone screwed up. Company and platoon designations have not changed.

Yes (read on), it seems that we all have this issue. I will wait to see how this resolves, but need to trust that the mail will go through no matter what the order

Same issue here - (number) company, (letter) platoon. I've been wondering the same thing.

What nuensis said (wrote). No way are they fundamentally changing the hierarchical organization of the Fourth Class Regiment. Looks like someone switched the field codes on the mail merge!
I would appreciate helpful suggestions. DD (of course) wants to get mail this summer and avoid any unnecssary mis-addressing hiccups. Would you recommend seeking an official correction, reversing things to align with the usual order, or ... (?)

Address your mail and packages using the correct convention, e.g.
MIDN Jane OysterMom
L Company 21 Platoon
Annapolis MD 21412
I am certain TPTB will correct this post haste. Anticipate the correction and follow the known convention and you will be fine (and your DD will get mail and packages without trouble).

Whether it is one way or the other, will it matter so much if someone puts:
29 Company P Platoon
when in fact the address is:
P Company 29 Platoon?
Will someone get their mail either way?
