USNA DoDMERB DQ

I have been DQ'ed by DoDMERB for USNA due to color deficiency but passed for USAFA. I was notified that I would be put into automatic consideration for a waiver. Would it raise my chances of gaining admission if I tried to clear or obtain a waiver as soon as possible?

There isn't really anything you can do except wait to see if USNA grants a waiver. USNA only grants 20 color deficiency waivers/year. They usually review them all towards the end of the admissions cycle and decide on which 20. A waiver would be required to receive an appointment but USNA would initiate that process if they believe you are competitive for an appointment.

+1

It's different if it's a DQ for something you can prove you don't have (i.e. allergy), but if you're color deficient, all you can do is wait.

USNA is more concerned with color blindness (red/green) thabecause these colors are very important in the surface, submarine and aviation communities. If you are appointed to USNA, I believe you will be required to sign something that states you understand you will be limited in your options upon commissioning to USMC ground and USN restricted/staff corps communities. Just mentioning it, in case you want to fly because, unless something has changed, that isn't possible in the USN or USMC if you're colorblind.

The same is true for USAFA - color blindness will preclude being a pilot.

Also one note as I read Capri's response. Just because you passed DODMERB does not mean you would be free and clear to fly at USAFA. At each SA you will have another physical. At USNA you will have a pre-commissioning physical your 2/C year (junior). This physical will determine what you are physically qualified for. Not sure when USAFA does their's, but guessing its pretty similar. I only say all this, because its obvious you are borderline on color deficiency. Wouldn't want you going to USAFA or somewhere else with one thing in mind then being shocked if your status changed at your pre-commissioning physical or even when you arrived at flight school. And yes, if you are granted a waiver at USNA and offered an appointment, you would sign an agreement understanding your commissioning options will be limited with color blindness. You are restricted to restricted line officer for USN and USMC ground. Also, if you went USMC, you would not be eligible for things like Communications Officer. Seeing colors of wires seems to be a pretty important thing.

Understood. In my essay, I specifically noted that I wanted to pursue a commission as an information warfare officer. Would that allow them to possibly understand my intentions and grant a waiver?

I don't have an answer, but can tell you that each class generates very few info warfare officers. Not sure if that helps or hurts.

Of course, the Army has just stood up a Cyber Branch--and cadets commission straight into it out of USMA. The deadline for the USMA application is the end of February. If you have a presidential or SDVET...it is not too late to apply.

And, while it is not a lot of cadets each year--they are not all computer science/ee majors and they are not all in the top of class although it usually goes out by the middle of the class.

Thank you for all the help.
Also, in the Army right now, there is an excitement around Cyber that can only be likened to the Army Air Corps at the birth of the Air Force. The Army is a great service, don't limit yourself. (If you are going to apply to USMA, call your regional admissions guy and tell him about your sudden revelation and then get busy...)

I had originally opened my application but did not continue the application and it was closed back in November. Do you know if it is still possible to re-open the application?
