Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere as I am new to the forum. My son is a Candidate for the USNA Class of 2021 and is currently "CPR". He received a communication from the USNA yesterday informing him that he was selected for the USNA Foundation Program. He is very excited but we have a lot of questions about this program as we await to hear back from a Foundation Representative to learn more. In the meantime, does anyone have any insight or experience into how this path to an Appointment works? Our son was recruited to a prep school in New England his junior year for his sport and was asked to repeat his junior year (which he did) and will be graduating this May. He has excellent grades and GPA (w/ 3 AP classes) but average to slightly above average SAT scores. As I understand it, the Foundation program will place him in a prep school of his choice for a year and cover some/most/all costs?? What we don't know is whether or not an Appointment to the Class of 2022 is guaranteed (so as long as he meets the standards and requirements of the Program)?? Will he also remain in consideration for an Appointment to the Class of 2021 through the current application cycle? Attending the USNA is his dream and he won't pass up this opportunity but we are anxious to understand a bit more and confirm that an Appointment is as close to guaranteed as possible to next years class. Any feedback from those experienced in this program is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

While waiting for detailed replies, recommend using Search to find prep threads - use "USNA Foundation Prep."

- Foundation rep will explain what is covered.
- Start looking at the schools now.
- He will need a new nom for the 2022 cycle, so get as much done for that before he goes. MOC staff won't be surprised. Apply for all for which eligible.
- If he completes all prep requirements satisfactorily, remains physically qualified and gets a nom, then he is in great shape for 2022.
- 2021 is probably not going to happen.
- The designated prep schools have a great relationship with USNA and know what to do to help.
- Look at prep scholarship as USNA really wants your son and is willing to wait for him, funding the lick and polish they think he needs to be assured of success at USNA in the seat they essentially will hold for him. He will gain much from the year of added maturity, time away from home and increased confidence.

usmcdad I was wondering how he received communication...email or phone call from USNA?

Thank you very much for your help and guidance.

Its an amazing path. Here is a link for a few weeks ago... https://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/usna-foundation-programs.54244/

There could be costs. You will fill out a financial form for Foundation and they will make a determination of how much you pay out of pocket. The prep schools on the list range from $10k-$40k depending on the school. There will be a tab for you to pay. There will also be a requirement that if you accept Foundation and decide to not attend USNA, there will be pay back costs. He will not be competitive for the 2021 class with this offer. He is as close as you can get to being guaranteed a spot in 2022. Essentially he does well, applies for all his Noms again and keeps his nose clean he will be there on I Day for 2022. There are 18 or 19 schools to look at. Some are military and some aren't. Northwestern is only 1 semester. They are located all over the country. Take a look at see what fits best. Foundation does this year in and year out. They will help guide you through this process.

usmcdad, DS was a Foundation Sponsored Prep and now a youngster. PM me if you have any specific questions. Capt Wallace at the Foundation was the BGO for sponsored preps c/0 2019 and was very helpful in guiding DS' decision on selecting his prep school. Cost is dependent on the school you choose - the Foundation and the prep school provides some financial assistance. Foundation contribution depends on household income. For DS all of the preps at his prep school rec'd their appointments - preps had to maintain certain requirements such as GPA, retake SAT/ACT and apply for nominations.

Congrats to your DS for the Foundation offer

Thank you very much. That is very helpful information. I will send you a PM shortly. Thank you.

My DS is currently a Foundation student attending Kiski. He passed up a direct appointment to the USCGA for this offer as USNA was his first choice. Feel free to PM me with questions. This year has gone fast. We are now waiting for his "official" appointment. The Foundation students are about the last to have there appointments in hand since they are finishing up their school year. Capt. Wallace will be very helpful in explaining the process and he becomes their new BGO. He follows them and visits them during Prep year. As long as they strive for all A and Bs, passes the PFT, and applies for another nomination, it will lead to an appointment. Basically, they get an extra year to be on there own and manage their time. He has become great friends with the other 5 at Kiski.

Begin to watch the attached video at the 57.19 min mark to hear the Sup's views on Accession avenues and success rates. I believe he states pretty clearly on what an asset the Foundation program is as well as its success rate. Having first hand experience with the Foundation program, it is an outstanding offer/opportunity
