USNA --> Marine Pilot

Talked with a member of the USNA Submarine Selection Board the other day. It is humorous that their 'pointing out the advantages of a submarine career' is interpreted by the midshipmen as being 'drafted'. Different perspectives of the difference in seniority, I guess.

If the following is true - then I agree with their perception that it is a "draft."

1. It is the only service selection that is REQUIRED to be one of your preferences. No other service selection has that requirement.

2. Some of those who get "selected" for Subs have some of their higher preferences bypassed while some of their classmates, with lower class standing, get some of those slots.

Sometimes majoring in something technical, and doing well, comes back to bite you if you're one of those individuals who does not want to go Subs.

Perhaps it's overblown, but it seems there is, at least, a shred of truth in the characterization that there is a "draft" for Subs.

At a minimum, there is definitely a "hard sell" in place to convince the midshipmen that Subs is a wonderful opportunity. There is an air of desperation in this process that midshipmen can sense - causing them to be both skeptical and cynical towards the community. Requiring them to list it as one of their preferences only serves to confirm their suspicions.
