USNA Official Candidate Notification?

Hi everyone, so I applied to NASS and I understand that the application to NASS acts as my preliminary application, but it states that I will receive a notification that I am an official candidate after I do the preliminary application. I was accepted to NASS but I have not received this notification, or at least I cannot find it. I have been labeled "competitive" for USAFA and my application opened up for USMA, but not USNA... am I not competitive to open an application? Or have notifications not gone out yet, or do I need to look deeper into my email?

Patience is required this year, as everything is different.

USAFA, USMA, and USNA are likely not on the same schedules in many aspects, which is true for other years as well. I would generalize that candidates at this stage deemed competitive by 1 SA will likely be so for all, but that can diverge in the end game, where they may get an offer of appointment from one but not others.

It is always good practice to check your spam folder.

I am sure someone will pop up with a better answer specific to USNA. I could swear this was discussed recently in another thread. You may want to browse recent threads in the USNA forum.

@Sean17

DS was told during Virtual NASS this past week that it would be another one to two weeks before candidate packets with candidate numbers would be sent out due to technical difficulties.

Admissions is switching to a new Platform this year .. it was supposed to launch a couple weeks ago, but apparently some delay ...I've been out of town the last week, and haven't seen any updates on status.

My son received an email from USNA Applications yesterday, 6/24, stating "All applicants should receive access to their full application & receive their personalized candidate number sometime within the next 7-10 days." It also included 2 essay questions to start working on. Keep an eye out! It should come soon.

Has anyone received their candidate number? It has now been 10 days.

Please be patient.

I am a huge proponent of my candidates getting their applications moving quickly with the senior summer being a good time to get it done but that said, this is just a difficult year in general and USNA Admissions is cutting over to a newer system. This one is widely used commercially but has to be "set up" for each place which requires a fair amount of customization. In the case of Service Academy Admissions, I would expect that specific privacy act issues place much of the data into one level of protection and then there is data with HIPPAA issues which should be encapsulated within the DODMERB world but probably has some presence here as well and that is a pretty seriously complex area. It all has to work to have the data flow through the different portals which include, the Candidates, the Blue and Gold Officers, the MOCs plus Admisisons itself with each getting access only to what is authorized but still having the right levels allowed to enter/edit as appropriate.

For those that are applying to multiple service academies -- and may already have your USMA/USAFA applications, don't take this as a sign that Navy doesn't care about you, or have its act together. This is a very rare , maybe "once in a lifetime" upgrade from a rather archaic system to a modern, commercial system (as OldRetSWO , the system is in wide use in a variety of businesses, and has been in process for years. (I saw a brief on it two years ago). However, there are certain things that can't be done until they do the cutover, and that's where the hangup is. Be patient..its coming soon !

This could only happen in 2020 lol

I have lived through three cutovers to this system in different companies and it was NEVER fast, easy or on time.

With the potential for fall sports being canceled and some State schools (UofSC) opting for ACT/SAT being optional. What kind of impact would this have on potential '25 candidates? AND what type of activities would be recommended for the fall in lieu of sports (or should DS rely on what he was done in previous years)? Talk about a weird year...

There has been no official guidance, and speculation is meaningless. However, I think it is safe to say that USNA Admissions will be looking for the same types of candidates they have sought during normal times, i.e. young leaders with strong academic, community service and athletic records. In my opinion (for what its worth), candidates shouldn't be focusing on what they can't do because of COVID, but rather looking forward to demonstrating their ability to adapt and overcome the hardships, and putting forth an strong application despite COVID.
