I applied for the academy and also the NROTC scholarship. I got the rotc scholarship to USC and I anticipate getting accepted into the academy. Now I need to make a choice. What does everyone think is “better” the academy or NROTC. I know it’s a very opinion/preference question but I just want feedback and advice from others.

@sophloaf0, the answer of which is “better” lies within you — and only you — depending on the criteria that are most important to you. People on this forum will be able to tell you about the many differences, as well as the similarities, but that’s about it. Any opinions you get about “better” would be unique to that person, and you have no way of knowing whether that person’s decision criteria are anything like yours.

“Better” is a very personal concept. Please come to your own conclusion on that, rather than relying on people posting on an anonymous forum. Best wishes to you.

That’s why I said I know it’s a very opinion and personal choice but I just wanna get input from others That’s why I specifically said that

Honestly there are so many threads on this topic I would recommend you start with the search button and then ask some more specific questions. I believe we had a pretty lengthy one last you regarding a young man who had NROTC to an Ivy vs USNA. If I remember correctly he chose USNA and is now a Plebe.

Part of it depends on which you USC you are talking about?

University of Southern California or
University of S. Carolina
University of Southern Carribean (true but funny)

Id go USNA... nothing can beat an academy education.

An Academy education is wonderful... for the right person and right reasons. It varies for each person on academic, life and career goals. Financials come into play too. Athletics, major, etc can play a role. What warfare community are you striving for? SEAL is your dream, USNA has many more billets and the success rate at BUDS is much higher. 24 x 7 military is great for some and not others. It is a very individual choice. For some it’s absolutely the right fit. For others it’s not the best environment for them and not where they will excel.

@navyman2019, I get the feeling there are Naval officers out there who did NROTC at Stanford or MIT or Harvard or Northwestern or Notre Dame or Cornell or Michigan or Princeton or Yale or any number of other high-end schools who’d quibble with that assessment.

Plant yourself where you will thrive. Period. Only you can figure it out, however it is you do that. Good advice from Hoops about some things to consider. Fine officers come out of both programs.

sophloaf0. You did not get into USC at least not yet. I also would not assume you will get Appointment to USNA because you get into USC. They are two very different schools. Many who got into Harvard Yale MIT Princeton Stanford do not get into USNA. This happens frequently in my district. If your district is a very competitive one then I would not bet you’re a shoe in for an Appointment. Last time I checked USC is in national top 20s school. So do not assume you qualify. Until you have an Appointment from USNA you are still a candidate in the run against other highly qualified candidates in your district. NROTC Scholarship you can get if you meet the minimum GPA requirement academically and meet the min ACT/SAT plus other Leader, Athlete, personal qualities. You do not need DODMERB Qualified until you have to officially sign in your Sophomore year. USNA you have to pass DODMERB NOM among the rest of qualifications to compete against your best candidates in your district. Do not assume until you get that Appointment.

Agree with CrewDad, you are counting chickens before they hatch. If you get the opportunity to make the choice, only you can decide. For me, the decision would be a no brainer, but then my Plan B schools were VMI and The Citadel.

Didn't you just post this...My application is complete-- besides awaiting medical qualification results. Am I supposed to contact my BGO to set up an interview? Or will the portal instruct me to do so? I previously emailed my BGO who is also my admissions counselor and got no response.
