Hey, I play tennis and run cross country, but doubt I'll be able to play on a college level, let alone at the Naval Academy. As both these sports are varsity, and neither are club, and you are required to play a sport, is there a way to play something like JV? I really love tennis (not so much XC), and want to play it in college (not expecting varsity level.) I guess what I'm saying is: will I have to give up tennis and just pick up one of the club sports? Or can I just kinda sit on the sidelines for tennis team, and practice, ect, but not play varsity matches? FYI, I play high school varsity tennis, so I'm not terrible

I'm told major sports have JV teams, only read that football does it, but I wouldn't doubt tennis does as well. You'll certainly have a chance to try out to make it. Just have to work hard at it and believe in yourself.

I am sure the tennis team does some type of try outs. I recommend contacting the coach and tell them of your interest and background. I also had friends who tried out for teams and were cut. The coaches liked their attitudes and love of the sport and they were asked if they wanted to be equipment managers. As boring as that may sound, it gets you off the yard for travel, you are a part of the team atmosphere and around a sport that you love. I had some friends who were recruited tennis players and never really made it to the top level at the Academy. They decided to pick up squash and excelled at it. There are a ton of varsity, club and intramural sports to choose from. If you do not play a varsity or club level sport then you play intramurals. Usually there are a two "seasons" offered throughout the academic year and the sports vary by season. They do offer intramural cross country in one of those seasons. There are also tons of sports offered that alot of students have never had exposure to and they give them a shot. I had alot of friends go out for rubgy, crew, and boxing wanting to play a sport and experience a "team" atmosphere. So don't rule out looking at other options. Good luck!
