USNA Summer seminar swap?

My son was accepted to USNA Summer Seminar 3, then he got into Boys’ State the same week. We passed along advice that Boys’ State was the better option, and he agreed but was disappointed to miss the USNA. He emailed the SS team to ask if he could switch weeks but was denied. I read on another forum that the Air Force academy allows direct swaps between weeks, but unsure if the Naval Academy would allow that too. Is there anyone out there in the same position who might want/need to approach them to switch from Week 2 to Week 3 for the same type of reason? Otherwise the spot will make someone on the waitlist very happy, and DS will be glad about that.

If I had to choose between the 2, it would be boys state. One gives you whole person multiple points and excellent experience, the other is a marketing tool that gives zero help in securing an appointment.

Either way, If I had to choose between the 2 I would 100% choose NASS.

As a parent, I'd recommend my kid go for the points every time - just like the OP mentioned. Applying to USNA is a competitive event. There are opportunities to visit USNA whether a candidate does or doesn't attend NASS. I expect NASS remains a very useful tool for USNA and many candidates. But, despite its utility, going for the points seems the wiser choice.

Hopefully, the OP can find someone who will do a swap and then be able to work the swap through USNA admissions.

The Superintendent’s instructions to the Admissions Board is to select candidates who “show high potential for leadership”. The activities that they score for leadership potential include the following:
  • Student body/council/government president/vice president,
  • class president or vice president,
  • school club president or vice president,
  • school publication staff,
  • National Honor Society,
  • varsity athletics,
  • varsity letter winner,
  • drama,
  • public speaking,
  • debating,
  • leader of musical group,
  • Eagle Scout/Gold Award,
  • Boys/Girls State or Nation,
  • Junior Reserve Officer Training Program,
  • Civil Air Patrol Cadet
  • Sea Cadets,
  • and sons or daughters of alumni.

I think boys state would look better on an app, I personally had more fun at NASS. It's also what you make of Boy's state that determines how fun it is.

If they already rejected your DS it sounds like there isn’t much to do. But I don’t know maybe there is another way?

Good luck with that!
Thanks. He has not yet formally given up his spot, and they didn’t reject him. He’s officially still signed up for week 3.
