Hello, I recently got an acceptance letter from USNA for their Summer STEM camp, and I am making a decision on whether to accept or decline. Can anybody tell me in more detail about what life is like in this camp (what you do, experience, etc.) Also, is this camp used just for applicants interested in joining USNA or is it also for students interested in STEM, but not really interested in USNA?

DD applied three times before winning a spot in Summer STEM. She did it because she was interested in STEM, but even more so in USNA. There are plenty of STEM camps out there, but only one on the Yard. She loved it and it helped cement her desire to attend USNA. Just being in the world-class STEM facilities, interacting with mids and faculty, and sleeping in Bancroft Hall did the job.

Best that I recall, there’s nothing on the application that directly measures your interest in attending USNA. So probably safe to say that while many —likely most — attendees have some interest in USNA, there may be a few with little or none (either going into the camp or coming out). Your attendance at STEM does not give you points on the USNA application, though your experience can give you something to write/talk about. Remember that STEM is an outreach and awareness program for potential candidates — nothing more, nothing less.

My son took the initiative and emailed his supt to see if there were funds available to sponsor him. After a meeting was held my son was successful in getting it paid for. Now if diesel (my old truck) can just remain under 6.00 (which what it was for two trips and back to the yard for my oldest son).

Bumping this thread a bit. DD will be at rising juniors camp week of 6/19....very excited! Any other rising juniors on here that will be at Summer STEM this year?

My DD was accepted to Summer STEM last year off the waitlist but was flat declined this year. From all accounts, she was an exceptional student during the week (excelled in the classes and did not get into trouble, etc) Anyone know if there’s a rhyme or reason to how they select? She’s heartbroken 💔. Thanks!

STEM, as is also the case with NASS is a marketing/awareness program and it is likely (at least to me) that USNA turned her down to allow another young person who has not been to USNA to get the USNA experience. This is NO indication that she won't be competitive for admission, just
a chance for someone else to experience what she already saw last summer.

Thank you. Appreciate your comments. I shared them with her and she feels much better now. Some of her squadron mates from last summer did not get in either.
