USNA vs. NROTC

Thank you for your information. He does really need to decide how he wants to live the next 4 years. Encouraging him to go on a CVW.

Since it doesn't seem like a lot of MIT NROTC folks are chiming in here, you might also consider a trip to the school, a visit with cadre, and trying to speak to a Midshipman or two while you're there. It won't be easy with time growing short and might not be possible, but it was worth suggesting. Nothing like first-hand knowledge rather than opinion from random strangers on some forum (not to take anything away from the opinions stated here).

Shelly - my son is a junior in NROTC at MIT and turned down USNA (and USAFA) to attend (I also have a son who's a senior at USAFA). I'd be glad to answer your questions and even get your son in touch with mine (he'd be glad to host him for CPW if your son is attending). However, I'd prefer to do so via PM. Can you PM yet? You may not have enough posts and I hate to post my email on an open forum but let me know if you'd like to get in touch and we'll come up with a way! And a big congrats!!

Notes from a current NROTC member

Ok, so I got denied from USNA Class of 2017 and went off to NRTOC at a university while reapplying for the Class of 2018.

I received my appointment in February for the Class of 2018 and I immediately accepted it.

The people are not as good in NROTC. The school/education is not going to be as good. The training is simply not as good.

You will be a better officer and set for life career wise if you go to USNA. To tell you the truth though, if you even think that you'd rather have a regular college experience... USNA is not for you.

Save the slots for people who want to go, not people who want a college experience.

Thank you for the information. Just curious what did you do during the application process this time differently? did you retake ACT, CFA etc....?
