USNA Waiting List c/o 2021

I received the NROTC Scholarship this evening- I haven't decided what school I will be taking it to (assuming I will be able to transfer); I am torn between WPI and RPI. Although, at this moment in time this is only a semi-temporary Plan B- c/o 2021 is still in the running! Let's do this wait-listers! Don't give up the ship!

Have all candidates not on the waitlist received a response already or are there still people in CPR? Im assuming if there are still people in CPR that they remove someone from the waitlist for every candidate that accepts an appointment?

It is a much more complicated process than just filling a spot in the class- they over appoint (approx. 1300) for a target class size of 1650-ish. There are around 70-120 candidates on the WL - some which will receive TWE sooner than others based on if the appointed individual shares the nomination slot in the class. I do not believe that CPR is a status at this moment, the WL is the new CPR. It is very rare for someone to get an appointment off of the waiting list due to the nomination complication.

It is normal for USNA to send out TWEs to those on the Wait List over time. They usually don't come all at once. The norm has been a handful or two as time passes. Some don't get the final TWE until I Day. Unless there is a rare case, no one should be CPR at this point. They should be Wait List, Appointed, or an LOA pending final medical decision or TWE. There could be a rare case for CPR, but more than likely its a rare case and they should be talking with admissions.

Congrats on the NROTC scholarship. That is a great path!

Last year my son heard nothing from USNA, after receiving appointments to both USMA and USAFA in January. Was on the wait list until literally only a few days before we were leaving for R-DAY at West Point. He got a call from USNA advising that if he still was interested a spot was available. He said thank you, and politely declined. His admissions officer, who was terrible throughout the entire process, and was impossible to communicate with, never gave him a clue as to what his status was. We concluded that he did not win the MOC slot for USNA, and WP was his first love, so he was fine with that. Then out of nowhere, when USNA was forgotten, he got that call. Had I known, I would have encouraged him to think about it.

I think sometimes those situations come out of nowhere, and nothing the Academy do to provide notice, but certainly it would be easier if someone was giving candidates an update now and then. I am sure my son had the worst admissions office in the history of USNA, as she never responded to any email or call. But don't think she had anything to do with him getting that call so late in the game. However, those calls do come.

We got several calls from USNA a few weeks later, with messages. I finally sent an email explaining that my son was at WP, and got a very nice email back from the new admissions officer for our area. Glad the old one is gone.

Thank you for sharing that. Just needed that light and you've provided that for me.
And there are a few people here who question whether what I say comes from a burning bush; but that is probably the source of "light" you speak of, and thus proof.

May I ask, how is the decision made on which candidate to delete from the WL and send a TWE to?
My understanding is the WL selection included a "lottery"
Thank you for your time and GOD bless all these young men & woman who are stepping up to serve our great nation!

For those who know, when USNA sends out their decision to either remove a candidate from the waitlist or appoint you from there, how do they first notify you? Is it through email first, or mail, or even phone?

It seems folks are getting TWEs via an email to check portal? Those who unfortunately got one can confirm. The norm for getting an appointment is a phone call this late in the game. Usually it's to confirm one is still interested and then possibly offer an appointment. These seem to be the norm from what we have seen this year and in past years, but every experience can vary. Just as I say a phone call, an AC may email first.

Sorry you feel this way about USNA Admissions, but wanted to respond to ensure that the Parents and Candidates on here have realistic expectations. First, keep in mind that there are only a handful of Admissions Officers, each one handling thousands of Applicants and receiving hundreds of emails a day. Second, I don't know what the nature of your communications with the Admission Officer was, but if simply inquiring about the status and where your DS/DD was in the process, I suspect that they 1) either don't know, or 2) can't tell you. It is something of a secretive process, as their are a lot of moving parts that have to come together - essentially coming down to selecting the most qualified candidate within a given Nomination pool. I recognize the angst Parents and Candidates feel (and see it here !), but keeping the candidate informed and comfortable about where they are in the process is not a high priority. I also recognize the angst that comes when another Service Academy has made an offer, but DS/DD is holding out to hear from USNA, but again, I don't think USNA cares. USNA doesn't view the other Service Academies as "the competition". My experience, in almost 15 years as a BGO, is that the Admissions Officers do a pretty good job. If you aren't getting a response from Admissions, contact your BGO, and he/she can reach out to CGO, or if it is simply a status question, answer it or tell you why they can't.
