Just noticed story on my FB about formation of US Space force. Interesting piece from USAF.

It’s unfortunate that the marketing department didn’t come with a different name. It just doesn’t roll off the tongue right....

The current administration and USAF certainly seemed to think so. It's a done deal now, so embrace the opportunities that may result from it.
The USAF never liked the idea, and for good reason. They only relented after the current administration ordered them to support it. USSF will only be one more money-hungry bureaucracy. I understand why Trump wanted it stood up, but I don’t think he or anyone in congress understands what space is all about. USSF will be the only branch that can’t deploy so much as a 50-cal downrange.

What is space all about that President Trump and Congress don’t understand?

From the statements by Trump and the congressional supporters of space force, it appears that they are under the impression that there will be actual battles going on in space, perhaps with actual human beings involved. On the contrary, everything in space operations is done behind a desk, with a computer and pen/paper. From what I’ve seen in my time in AFSPC, we are a long way off from serious combat in space. If they wanted space to be managed by its own service, I believe they would have been better off creating a uniformed branch similar to NOAA or USPHS, that isn’t an armed service. There isn’t much need for military training in my line of work. The job could just as easily be accomplished by contractors. To be clear, I don’t have a problem with the president, I just don’t agree that space is it’s own war-fighting domain, at least not for the foreseeable future.

This is not Halo. Or Star Wars. Or anything else. This is Real Life. There are no space battles, and likely won't be for a long time.

Though I'm not old enough to remember General Billy Mitchell's treatment for his advocacy of air power, I recognize that ignorance and lamentation of similar scale for space power would be unwise.

While traditional battles aren't necessarily the focus of USSF (and are indeed unrealistic), its incorporation of all AFSPC into a dedicated branch for at least the technological scope is important. Let the Air Force focus on air, and let the Space Force focus on space.

Does America really need a Space Force right now???
> Right now, well no. However, it is refreshing to see the Military anticipating the next battle space, instead of reacting when it is too late. When the next major (think World War II magnitude), we are not going to have the luxury of 18 months to mobilize and fight. We are going to need to be prepared to fight from Day 1 ....this is a step in the right direction.

> I don't disagree with the idea that it will be another hungry mouth to feed, but if managed correctly, a single service prepared to control the space battle ground could be more efficient than each service having their own space forces. I see alot of that already with each branch of the military's focus on Cyber,,,,,how much duplication of effort do you think we have there ?
(Of course, this creates a whole new issue regarding Jointness...that was a new buzzword when I served back in the 80's, and I'm still not convinced all those issues are resolved).

Come on Tex232 think of a Moonraker (1979) scenario, this could happen for sure!

Your 'wish' is my command!

I personally believe there will still be duplication of effort in Space, just as there is now in Air. All branches of the military currently have their own air assets, and at the creation of the USAF, only the Army relinquished their aviation resources (only to create the helicopter program soon after). The Navy/USMC kept their planes, just as they will do with their space assets right now. I could easily see the Air Force once again creating a space program of their own in the future, albeit smaller than what AFSPC used to be.
