Validating Classes

My plebe is taking a foreign language and didn't validate any courses (he would have had to do homework in high school for that :) ... I think based on his performance on the language ability test during beast, he was offered the opportunity to take 4 years of a language deemed important - they moved chemistry to yuk year to be taken alongside physics -- so as to pedro's point, language is a possibility for all plebes w/o necessarily validating another class --

Here's a hint in case you are still looking for answers, or someone else is in those same shoes on validating classes -- if you already know what you want to major in, it's nearly always worth the time to look on the department website and make contact with an instructor there directly.

They know scheduling questions inside and out from being academic advisors, AND most of them are happy to help eager students work things out at exactly the time of year when the admissions office is overwhelmed.

Seriously. These folks who are devoting their time to teaching cadets are completely invigorated by those who care enough about their education to get it right. That's why they are there in the first place. They *want* to teach and lead you. If they are personally too busy, they will likely ensure your letter gets to someone who has time to answer it.

A well-written (i.e., non-pompous and briefly to the point) e-mail will be extremely well received and likely a refreshing change of pace for them. Keep your introduction and what your question is short (you don't need to send your life history -- they'll ask if they need more info). Just send to the one person, tho' -- don't scattershot the whole department.

Going directly to the source for information is the best skill you can learn in life. It's not cheating, it's not "trying to get one over," it's not insider trading, it's door-knocking ability. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll get at it. And as long as you are respectful, as my grandfather always said, it never hurts to ask.

If we pass the validation test, can we choose not to validate a class? Or is it take the test and get your placement?
