Hi. I was recently accepted and am planning on doing an engineering major, most likely mechanical. When I looked at the USNA validation page, it seemed as if I couldn’t get any courses validated. Just wondering because I have already taken Calc 1, 2, and 3 and am a teacher assistant for 1 and 2 and wouldn’t really want to take them again. Looks like I’ll have to, but just checking to make sure. Thank you very much for your help!

You will take validation tests during Plebe Summer and may place out or into a higher section.

Thanks! Can I validate courses with an AP test or just the tests during Plebe Summer?

Only tests during the summer. Depending on how you do, you’ll have a choice of whether to validate or not. Good case can be made for either choice.

There is the general page on validations, and the Department pages have information specific to their courses.

I'm in the same boat on validations, I've taken Calc 1-3 and would prefer to move on to the next math course (chemistry and physics as well). USNA has syllabi and previous practice tests posted on their website that I've been using to study.

Some technical things I've noted - USNA has two calculus III courses. SM221 includes a truncated rundown of vector valued functions and trajectories (the course skips the torsion/complex curvature/the Frenet frame and a couple other topics with niche real world applications), while SM221X omits vector valued functions and trajectories entirely and instead includes the same study of sequences, series, and improper integrals seen in AP Calculus BC. Both courses cover multivariable functions and line integrals/vector fields. I am not sure which of these courses the placement tests are tailored to, so I'm planning on reviewing for both of them.

USNA Physics I includes some topics AP Physics C: Mechanics skips, including fluids and sound waves, and USNA Physics II includes electromagnetic waves and optics, which AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism skips.
