I tried to find them but are the other academies not listed because they’re “free”? I would assume they’d all be in the top as well no?
That pretty good dough you're making.. are you piloting?Few years after graduation I was making ~$22k a month doing one of the coolest jobs in the world, as a 25 year old. And getting to experience things money can't buy.
22k a month x 6 mos = 132k, sounds like 2nd mate/2nd engineer. that probably inclusive of vacation. could be even 3rd mate/engineer money at some places. That pretty good dough you're making.. are you piloting?
It would have to be.. cause there's no way a 2nd Mate is making that kinda scratch per month without vacation pay.. As a point of reference my kid, who's currently sailing master, is making right around $190,000 per year, which includes his vacation pay for 6 months and his one hour per day ILPTO [in lieu of port time off] overtime.. Bottom line; the money is good.. and the paid time off is unmatched.. Unless you're working for MSC..that probably inclusive of vacation
What is your job if u don’t mind me asking? It's the only academy where you can make 100k+ your first year out if you make it. going from 0 to 140k is an interesting experience.
Not true. You can do this as a grad from any of the State Maritime Academies too. It's the only academy where you can make 100k+ your first year out if you make it. going from 0 to 140k is an interesting experience.
i don’t know much, rookie parent of a son with LOA to KP. I thought KP grads had a lisence upon graduation that was in someway superior to State schools, and that impacted initial earning potential. Is that wrong? Not true. You can do this as a grad from any of the State Maritime Academies too.
Here’s some good comparative reading:i don’t know much, rookie parent of a son with LOA to KP. I thought KP grads had a lisence upon graduation that was in someway superior to State schools, and that impacted initial earning potential. Is that wrong?
The State Maritime Academy Grads sit for the same USCG license(s), and compete for the same jobs as KP grads.i don’t know much, rookie parent of a son with LOA to KP. Yes, but then what are the advantages of KP grads comparing State Maritime Academy Grads, as the state maritime is much easier to get in? Seek for any adviceThe State Maritime Academy Grads sit for the same USCG license(s) and compete for the same jobs as KP grads.
MSC masters are working 4 month trips with equal time and making more than 190. for the lower officers/ratings there isn't much time off, but masters and chengs seem to have a special deal.It would have to be.. cause there's no way a 2nd Mate is making that kinda scratch per month without vacation pay.. Yeah, but my kid doesn't have to worry about any 'special deal'.. he works under a contract that guarantees his time off.. and he's more than satisfied with the money he makes. I worked out of the MM&P for 34 years, and I'll tell you this; you couldn't pay me enough to go to work at MSC in any capacity.MSC masters are working 4 month trips with equal time and making more than 190. for the lower officers/ratings there isn't much time off, but masters and chengs seem to have a special deal.

@justdoit19 This is a bit of a drift off the thread topic, but since you asked.. Lack of time off would be the primary reason. That and I didn't want to work for the government.. There are other issues with working at MSC too.. read through some of the below linked Gcaptain forum threads and it'll give you a pretty good idea what those issues are..Why? Curious.
I would only consider MSC for a couple years right out of school. At that point the extended sea time is to your advantage for upgrading. You literally could get to CM/CE in 3 years. Once I got that license and took the last test for the CG I needed I would beat feet VERY VERY quickly, the sea time to pay ratio is not worth it and is closer to Foreign flagged than US flaggedyou couldn't pay me enough to go to work at MSC in any capacity.

nowhere close to foreign flagged at MSC, unless you're talking about european crews or a well paid nationality. blatantly false info. last year I made a little over 135 for 8 months of sea time, comes out to ~17 a month on board.
Ahh, so you're an MSC bubba.. Well that explains why you're so unhappy all the time.. Just a guess, but I'll bet you did all your cadet sea time on MSC ships too..I know what it's like to hate every day of work. I push through it because the pay is okay (6 figures in your first year is a possibility for sure, particularly if you're engine but also for deckies), but not fantastic and it's an easy job (now)
While in the 80s, the pay was not as high. . . . but as a 24 year old, I was sailing CE on ocean tugs, and later on ATBs. While it might be conjecture, I feel that I could not have done that without the KP experience.Few years after graduation I was making ~$22k a month doing one of the coolest jobs in the world, as a 25 year old.
