Vandy vs Sijan

It’s all up to personal preference. Vandy is closer to the amenities such as the gym, C-Store, mailroom, and parking as a 2-deg but Sijan has a lower permanent party (officer) presence, proximity to Mitch’s, better parking as a firstie, and rodent problem.

I’m partial to Vandy having been in Groups 1 & 2.

I lived in both. Over the years, upgrades have brought the furniture to a fairly even position. As you can imagine, with roughly 2000 dorm rooms, they have to phase that stuff in and it takes weeks to get through both dorms. The room sizes are the virtually the same. The layout is virtually identical.

I would say that because you do not have a choice.... the reality does not matter.

In terms of location, @Tx2AFA is spot on - it is all up to your unique needs. I was in Sijan for the first two years and enjoyed the proximity to the dining hall and academic building. In my final two years, I was in Vandy and as an upperclassman with freedom, there was plenty to like about Vandy.

In terms of access to amenities, Vandy has Sijan beat in just about every way:
Mail Room located inside the same building
Barber Shop located inside the same building
Cadet Store located inside the same building
Arnold Hall (Student Union type building) is next door
Athletic Fields are immediately behind it

Chapel is centrally located, but the door faces Sijan, so I give the edge to Sijan
Parking lot is connected to Sijan vs walking .5 miles to the upper lot nearest to Vandy, so again the edge to Sijan
Dining Hall is connected to Sijan and you can ALMOST get all the way there indoors via corridors.

And First Group is showered and signing out after parades while Sijan people are still marching off the parade field.

But, it’s not in your control so no need to worry about it

TRUTH! I always felt bad for 4th group... The top of the parade ramp is at Vandy - even after you march off the Parade Field, you have an even longer hike back to the squadron. The true difference in time between Squadron 1 exiting the parade ramp and Squadron 40 making it back to their rooms is well over 40 mins.

I never thought there were perks to being in Mighty Mach 1, but you do raise a compelling argument.

Son moved from Deuce to the All-Stars in the shuffle and felt the pain of that change. Of course, he was excused from parades his whole 2-degree year because of his PRK surgery.

I think I would have preferred Vandy, but ended up living in Sijan all four years. My last year in particular I managed to snag the perfect (to me) room in the northeast corner of the building. Closest possible location to Mitch’s, closest to Fairchild, right next to the building’s freight elevator, bathrooms, drinking fountain, and stairwell.

Sijan does have its own barber shop located in the same building. It’s also right next to cadet issue and the alterations shop. Not quite as useful as some of the other things in Vandy, but the convenience was nice when they were needed.

Say what! I wonder when that happened. Is it on the t-zo level in a vacated office like the bank no one used?

Uh...did something change? My BCT initial shave/haircut was done in the Sijan BBShop. It was down near the far eastern end, near the Sijan display, near one of the group staff areas. That was my barbershop all four years at USAFA (CS-34 and CS-39).

Did that change between 1983 and 1995 (when '99 were doolies)?
