Hello all,

I know West Point traditionally gives major weight towards having varsity sports in high school but would students be penalized if varsity sports weren't even available? I recently transferred to a new school for my Junior and Senior year of high school that does not offer any form of sports. At my old school, I was a two-year varsity Cross Country runner so would that somehow count even though I won't be able to run my last two years or would I be adversely affected for not being a varsity athlete?

USMA won’t penalize you if your school doesn’t offer a particular program — whether it’s AP classes or varsity sports or anything else. They’ll know what’s available to you by reviewing your school profile.

That said, USMA values varsity athletics because it entails teamwork, leadership, commitment, persistence, resilience — all important attributes for cadets and officers. So seek opportunities to develop those aspects. You’ll need to demonstrate these strengths, whether or not it’s via varsity sports. Best wishes to you.

Most homeschooled students don't have access to varsity-level sports either. Find other sports opportunities in your community. Even the town rec sports teams can give you the opportunity to show teamwork and leadership.

Can you do Varsity Sports at another school? For example, kids who go to our public Magnet schools can be on the sports/band teams for their home HS.
Can you join AAU running or something where you can compete/train?

If you liked running maybe you could should your dedication by entering and training for a marathon. The have a marathon team at WP. Look for other opportunities for leadership. Maybe 4H or boys state?

WCS points for leadership count the same whether they are achieved through varsity sports or some other activity, although some activities count for more points than others. So lack of varsity sport participation will not hurt if you have other activities that earn leadership points. It will hurt if you do not.
