I was diagnosed with Vocal Cord Dysfunction during the summer of my freshman and sophomore year of high school after a misdiagnosis of asthma. For those who aren't familiar, VCD is very similar to asthma, in that breathing problems occur, except that its the vocal cords that close up and cause breathing problems. I saw a speech therapist who specialized in VCD in order to learn how to overcome it (breathing with the diaphgram and breathing slowly) and I strongly believe that I have overcome most of it. Its comes back to bite me every now and then, mainly during repeated excercises with little time to catch my breath inbetween. I was wondering if this was something I would be able to get a waiver for, or if this is an automatic DQ. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

This will be a disqualification from DoDMERB, I have no doubt about that. As for a waiver, I really don't know. You have stated that you still have some difficulties with strenuous activities, which would lead me to believe that you would have a difficult time in getting a waiver.

The best thing I can tell you at this point in time, is that if this is what you want, go ahead and apply and go through the waiver process. You never know what is going to happen, and the only way to truly know the answer is to go through the process.

I can definatly suppress it if I focus a lot, but sometimes it just overwhelms me. To get a waiver, would I have to get my coaches to say that its not a deal, or my doctors, or a DODMERB, or what? Thanks.

You would have to be symptom free. DoDMERB will be requesting all medical records concerning this, and if you have stated to your physician that you are still having issues it would have been noted.

The best thing to do is to be honest and open concerning where you are. Letters from physicians and coaches could definitely help the cause.
