Vice President Nomination

My DD applied recently and realized the same thing. It's like that application went into a void. Don't know if it actually went through, or if it was timed out as it took a while to fill out the questions. DD did not receive an email confirming receipt of the application.
I'm also curious as to if other people besides @IggyMom23 have experienced this--or if they DID receive a confirmation.
I submitted mine in August and DID receive a confirmation. I hope your DD's went through!!

This question comes up every year for various SAs. You may want to just check on it with Admissions with a quick call to confirm your application shows you have applied for it. I suspect for the majority of applicants, the VP nom app will be visible to Admissions staff, even if the applicant has had no confirmation. You would kick yourself if you thought you had submitted it, but it ddn’t “stick” - and if you were then past the application deadline. Apologies to Admissions staff if you get a rash of VP nom checks; I’ve always thought this should be on the Fix It list.

From anecdotal observation, these seem to be given out late in the cycle, to applicants the SA really wants but perhaps have received no other nom.

Copy and paste us the way to go on these!

How did you learn of the 3500 character limit? I see an asterisk on everything but no explanation of what the asterisk is. Is 250 minimum of max? Doesn’t say. Essay is 250. Not sure why there would be any issues.

I’ve tried everything to help my child. We’ve reduced the quantity of words on everything. Switched from Chrome to IE. Nothing is accepted. What gives?

He keeps getting “error in processing submission” no matter how hard we try. He is below 3000 characters in all boxes and below 250 in the essay. Any advice?
Are you counting characters AND spaces?

Clear the cache.

Good move to try doing different browsers.

DS ran into this same problem last fall and found that the character count seemed to be including the hidden special characters like a new paragraph, carriage return, etc. It was counting more than just characters and spaces.

Hope this helps.

Yes, that too. I have run into that in job portal applications, and as a matter of habit, always allowed 25-50 character + space margin.

It’s amazing what can be cut out of prose to get it down. Unnecessary “that,” “in order to,” etc.

Seriously. Congress determines the number of nominations for each source. You get 5 VPs. This is not to say that the VPs themselves are actually involved in the selection. I believe SA has an application, and presumably each admissions office ranks and stacks each candidate and builds a class using candidates they can nominate at will.
Are you a candidate, parent, retired military, cadet?

Sorry, another ‘huh??’ From me.

The SA doesn’t have an application for the VP nom.

The VP nom is applied for though their own application, on their own website.

You are posting some confusing information here on the forums. You can go find each application process on their own primary site.

Each SA controls how they use the VP nom. It’s not a “top 5” ranked award/charging of the appointment.

I read one of your recent posts mentioning DIG, it’s not listed in the acronym, what does it mean? Thanks.

Posted for the benefit of upcoming classes of applicants, from the VP nomination website. Note there are 5 noms available spread across 4 classes, with the DoD SAs managing the process. They can use those noms however they wish. Perhaps USNA has given an LOA to a candidate they really want, but the candidate lives in a fiercely competitive state where the Senators and Representative collaborate to not duplicate noms across slates, and no matter how many SAs the candidate has applied for, they have gotten just 1 nom - to a school not USNA. USNA may decide to use the VP nom for this candidate. We usually don’t see these show up in the appointment lists until late in the cycle, because I am sure all the Admissions teams have hard decisions to make on these.

VP Nom Copied Content follows:
The Vice President is authorized to nominate individuals to the United States Military, Naval, and Air Force Academies but cannot nominate to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and does not nominate to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

The Vice President is the only authorized nominating authority who can nominate U.S. citizens without geographical restrictions. He or she may have a maximum number of five nominees in attendance at each authorized academy at any one time. Normally, he or she has one or two vacancies each year. To be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must complete the online nomination application during the application period of March 1 to January 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies. The Office of the Vice President will not accept paper applications.

Due to a large volume of applicants (usually several thousand per academy), the Vice President has authorized the academies to evaluate all applications and rank them according to qualifications. In screening candidates, the academies evaluate an individual’s high school or college academic record, results of the ACT and SAT tests, recommendations from individuals who are in a position to judge the applicant’s character and academic potential, and physical and medical qualifications. In view of this screening by the academies, any correspondence subsequent to an applicant’s actual application (e.g., letters of recommendation, high school and college transcripts, and ACT/SAT examination results) must be sent directly to the academy when requested. Do not send this information directly to the Office of the Vice President.

Notification of those selected for a nomination is normally made in late winter or early spring of the year in which the class convenes.

For any additional information regarding Vice Presidential nominations, please contact the appropriate academy directly.

Hello, long-term members of this forum. Has any appointee in our SA forum's history ever reported receiving the elusive VP nom (in any SA)? Just curious...was looking over some lists and never found yet an entry indicating VP.

Yes, keep looking.
Also keep in mind only a relatively small percentage of each class find SAF and reports their appointments here.
Only the DoD SAs have VP noms.

I haven’t seen a VP nom on the forum, but when I had Tik Tok I followed a woman who recently graduated from USNA and most of her content was USNA and commissioning related, and she received the VP nom. She had no other nominations and had committed to USCGA when she received the VP nomination and offer of appointment from USNA mid April. I think you can search “Hana USNA” on Tik Tok and find her.
