Vice President Nomination

My DS burst into our room at 12:05 this am (scaring the life out of me and the dog) to show us his West Point portal, which now shows a nomination…from the Vice President. I haven’t really been back to sleep and have to be up in 3.5 hours, but wow, what a feeling! He is waiting on USNA as well, but USMA was the first SA he was interested in so he was pretty bummed when he didn’t receive a congressional nomination. So this is amazing.

This is great news - proof positive the VP nom
does get given out. The general theory around here is the SAs hang onto these for candidates they want but who were unable to obtain a nom from other sources.

Let’s hope the next report is an appointment offer.

So since DS received the VP nom last Friday, I’ve been pretty good with not obsessing and speculating (I have…it’s Wednesday! 😁). It has certainly eased our minds a little as we wait for news from either academy. While I knew it wasn’t a sure thing, I’m just wondering how it works. I assumed USMA would give him the nom in order to offer appointment, but I have also read on here that it can be given to 10 per slot at an academy, in which case it would be the same “odds” as if being on an MOC slate. Does anyone have insight?

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I've been a USAFA ALO for, well, 28 years...and I've seen only one other VP Nom in that time. I had a candidate (and one of my JROTC students) receive one from the VP for USAFA.

And now she's a second classman at USMA (it was her first choice).

Ok, so it seems they don’t give them out like candy 😆. Now we wait…

Hello, long-term members of this forum. Has any appointee in our SA forum's history ever reported receiving the elusive VP nom (in any SA)? Just curious...was looking over some lists and never found yet an entry indicating VP.

I just saw one today for USAFA

Vice Presidential Nomination received.

Congratulations - this is happy news! I'm so tickled to hear about a VP nom finally. Thanks for sharing and wishing you all the best!

At the top of my DS’s USAFA portal where there had been a big fat red X - no nomination received, a green checkmark suddenly appeared around 4/3 - “Vice Presidential Nomination Received.” We were checking to see if the application might actually be closed. Still awaiting a decision.

I can attest to our experience on the VP nom a couple years ago. DS had two noms (MOC & 1 SEN) for USMA in his portal early on. As the appointment season went along into the end of March with no news, DS then received a VPRE2 nom in portal. We know he was high on the qualified alt list. Couple weeks later notification of appointment from MOC. We do not know where the appointment actually was charged. Our conclusion was the academy's can use how they need everything to fit and all years are not the same.

I “think” I understand the complexity of the process and the various nominations one can receive. Sounds like the VP is led by the SA needing a nomination for an applicant they like but that applicant still needs recommendation. My question is does the process allow for the VP (VP committee) to make the slate and make the first candidate Principal?

Is there a VP committee or does the SA decide who gets the VP nominations?

If the SA decides who gets the nomination - does it matter if there is a “principal” nomination or not?

The post above indicates the person who got the VP nomination already had other nominations. So maybe they didn’t win their slates so they were given a VP nomination to find a charging source (as opposed to a nomination).

As far as I know there is no VP nomination committee or VP nomination “slate”. Everyone who applies gets on the list for the Academy to pick from if needed.

This is slightly different from the other posts on this thread, but it's VP nom-related so I didn't want to make a new one.

Prompt: 250 WORD ESSAY: DESCRIBE A CHALLENGE OR A HARDSHIP YOU HAVE OVERCOME AND HOW

Quite frankly, I haven't had any crazy trials, tribulations, hardships, etc. in my life (unless I complained about my mom, which would do more harm than good). Because I haven't had any major, life-altering events, I was going to write about "growing pains" I experienced in my first leadership position, and how I grew and adapted to "fill in those shoes". Would that be a fitting response to the prompt, or should I find something else?

That's a perfectly fine topic to write about, and it shows how you've grown as a leader through challenges.

DS submitted his VP nomination application today. No acknowledgement or confirming email…..Odd. No request for standardized test scores or transcripts either. Not sure if that is just how it goes with the VP nomination.

The SAs manage all the admin, review and selection of this handful of noms. They will have everything they need. There is no dedicated VP staff who reviews these applications.

There is not normally an acknowledgement, at least in some of the SA systems, something that is commented on every year.

These are typically given out late in the cycle, perhaps to a candidate who is particularly desired but has not received a nom from other sources.
