My DS is trying to submit the application for VP Nomination, but he keeps getting an error message. The site does not give a reason for the message. It says "THERE WAS AN ERROR PROCESSING YOUR SUBMISSION". All of the entries were under the 3500 character limit and his essay was under the 250 word maximum limit. All required information was entered and nothing was left blank. Thank you

- The limit may include characters and spaces.
- Try a different browser.
- Clear cache.

Thank you for your help. We tried different browsers and the 3rd one worked. Thank you again.
Which one? Might benefit others to know.

Glad it did. These kinds of application portals are usually optimized to work with 1 browser better than others. For years, govt systems were notorious for preferring IE browsers.

Is the VP nomination of 5 some sort of joke? Are they really sifting through 10K nomination applications to find the best 5?

No joke. Congress sets the number of nominations for each source. The VP gets 5. Now, that isn't to say the VP herself is actually involved in selection. I believe the SAs have the applications and likely each admission office ranks and stacks each candidate, and then uses the nominations available to them to build out the class.

Who typically gets the VP nomination? It seems unlikely someone who is top 5 in the entire country wouldn't receive a nomination from a representative or senator.

I'm not sure where you are getting the 'top 5' reference from.

Nominations are like tickets to the dance. There are lots of nominations, but only so many tickets to the ball. The academies use every type of nomination to build the class they want and they use those nominations at their discretion. Someone who receives an appointment and their nomination was charged to the VP may never know that. They just know they got an appointment. Multiple candidates may receive more than one nomination. Some receive several.

Let's say the academy has 3 kids they really want, but they are in super competitive districts and they didn't win their slate. They aren't eligible for the Presidential. The academy might then elect to assign the VP nom so they can offer 1 or more of those kids appointments.

DS received a nom from each Senator. The one that named him principal is NOT the one where his appt. was charged. The academy wanted that slot and that flexibility to select the next candidate on the slate.

I'm not sure I explained it in the clearest way (like mud, really), but I hope it helps.

Happens all the time. Think of the elected officials who collaborate and do not duplicate noms across slates or agree 1 nom to 1 SA per applicant, regardless of how many they applied to or how they ranked them.

From anecdotal observations, SAs hang on to these until near the end of cycle. They know what candidates they want, and if they don’t have a nom, a VP nom might magically appear in their portal.

The VP has no dedicated staff for these. SA manages all aspects.

So if my representative called me and said they gave me their nomination, does that mean my nomination will be charged to them or could it be charged from someone else?

If it is charged from someone else, would I be 1 of the 5 they can have at a SA for my representative or the place I am charged to?

Sorry if any of these questions seem dumb or don't make sense. I'm just confused on how nominations are charged to people.

Okay, let me give this a shot. If you received more than one nomination, your appointment, should you receive one, could be charged to any of the nomination sources you received.

If you receive an appointment, whoever the SA charges your nomination to would have you as 1 of their allotted 5 at the SA at any given time.

Not dumb questions, but a complex process. Really, most candidates won't ever need or want to know the minutiae that is the nomination/appointment process.
I think it's interesting. DS just happened to be one of the oddballs that got a nicely written letter from Senator A saying he was the principal nominee, then-Senator B's nomination popped up in his portal as well. The only way he knew who his appointment was charged to was that Senator B's staffer called his school and set up a time to surprise him via phone and told him he had received an appointment. And, Senator B invited him to their press release and meet and greet. Otherwise, he wouldn't have had a clue who he was charged to.

Does that help? It's a crazy muddy, convoluted, chess game.

The best way to look at it is that the Academies have authority to add from alternates to fill vacancies in the class. You might not be
filling anyone specific's slot as vacancies are controlled by the academies.

@YoitsFly
Let’s take a breath and walk through it.

First and foremost, if you are offered an appointment, you probably won’t care much about what nomination source it’s charged to, and you may never know. And no one cares on I-Day.

Second, if you haven’t done this yet, go read the Pinned Post at the top of the Nominations forum. And go find the link I post about twice a week that is the Congressional Guide to Service Academy Nominations.

“So if my representative called me and said they gave me their nomination, does that mean my nomination will be charged to them or could it be charged from someone else?”
If you are told you have a nomination from your Representative, that means your name is on the slate (list) of up to 10 names submitted to the SA. Your nomination doesn’t get “charged.” Appointments do. If another person on your slate is offered an appointment, and it’s the one charged to the Representative to fulfill one of their 5 spots spread out over 4 classes, you are not out of the running. The SA controls other nom authorities, and if they want to offer you or any other fully qualified candidate on the slate an appointment, they have options to charge your appointment to another nom source.

“If it is charged from someone else, would I be 1 of the 5 they can have at a SA for my representative or the place I am charged to?”
See above. If you get offered an appointment, do your happy dance and don’t spend a minute thinking about nom business in the background.

Nominations aren’t charged. They just exist to drive you crazy. 😉

Speaking of the VP nom…my DS submitted his application several months ago, and realized he never received any further communication or confirmation it was received. Just wondering if anyone else did…I think he reached out to his FFR about it and whether he should resubmit it. I’m just curious what other experiences are…

My DD applied recently and realized the same thing. It's like that application went into a void. Don't know if it actually went through, or if it was timed out as it took a while to fill out the questions. DD did not receive an email confirming receipt of the application.
I'm also curious as to if other people besides @IggyMom23 have experienced this--or if they DID receive a confirmation.
